Akito from the beginning of the series is a sociopath at best. Her Father, being the previous God of the 12 animals, loved her with all his heart. So much so that her mother, Ren, hated her for it. From the moment she was born, she was always told that "God" loved her the most because she was his daughter. When Akira died, Ren descended into insanity and the servants lied to Akito that Akira gave her a special gift (which, in reality was just an empty box) that held his soul. It was from then, her gender confusion began. Leaders of a clan were not female, but rather, male. Thus, it was decided that Akito be raised a male and the spiral started.
Before the canon point I'm taking her from, Akito was a maniacal sociopath. She believes that everyone that she ever loves will leave her. So, she imposed her authority as head of the clan to keep all her beloved cursed members near her. The moment that she thought that one of them would stray (Hatori, for example), she'd ruin it. She even went as far as to blind Hatori in his left eye because he was in love with someone. She'll ruin relationships within the clan too: if any male dares to fall in love with anyone but her, she'll think its treachery and destroy them.
Save for one man--Shigure. Shigure, whom she's been in love with ever since she was eight years old. He had given her a camilla and kissed her cheek, saying how much he loved her. As time progressed, she had a favorite--Kureno. It's unclear what started the feud between her and Shigure, because she was oblivious to his plans and his love. After a while, being the most adored person in a clan gets to your head and she thought she could have anyone. She sleeps with Kureno because she damn well can and because she's God. Then, she starts to make the others miserable as she is; she's trapped in a house all day, unable to go out and see the world. She can't even attend high school, hell she can't even be her own sex.
Enter Honda and her world turns upside down. Suddenly, her beloved Yuki - the Rat and the God's favorite, was starting to hang close to her. Even the rejected Cat started to gravitate towards her. Slowly, what was already unhinged becomes something catastrophic. It's rather like the tale of the Black and White Swan. However, she starts to see her previous juuiishi being released from the curse that she starts to panic. When her favorite Kureno, was released she flew into a rage and stabbed him. Then Tohru "fell" off a cliff and that's when she started to crack and realize that she wanted them, but she wanted them to love her. She, Akito, just wanted them to be happy, but together.
She wants a world without pain, without limitations, without the confines and without misery. From chapter 130, she starts to realize that there's only been one person for her. That, Ren, her mother made her miserable and that's why she's so angry at the world. Akito embraces the fact that lives move on and at some point she's going to have to be alone. But, she most importantly embraces her love for Shigure and who she is as a person. Akito wants to be Akito for her sake and no one else's. She has really low self esteem and it's a new concept for her to love herself without the love of others.
The fact of the matter is that she's always loved him. She spurned him because she loved him, because she was hurt that he slept with her mother. She wants his love, she wants his revenge, she wants his love, she doesn't want to be friends. She doesn't want to be friends, she wants his bad romance. For the first time, she loves something so unconditionally that this is the first time that she's willing to set herself up to be rejected.

Akito is terrified. Not because she's been brought somewhere strange, but because she's alone. She'd seen places near venice when she was a child, learning through correspondence. Akito has even dreamed about leaving her duties and seeing the world. Of course, she's never said it; they could never reprimand something they couldn't see.
Ren could never see.
Akito resist the urge to hug herself as she started to explore. For one, she felt vulnerable. This was the first time she had ever explored anywhere looking as … feminine as she did now. She didn't know anyone, she didn't know where to get a hold of someone from the family--her title meant nothing. She meant nothing.
Soon, the terror of being in a completely foreign place caught up with her and she felt her chest congest with the cry that would never be heard. She refused to tear up; too many people to see her --
Even now, in all her fear, in a strange place with no one to help her, Akito wanted one person to hold her and tell her that it was okay.
"Shigure… " She whispered, holding herself, "Please be here."
