[Compile] L, Matsuda, Light, Aizawa

Aizawa was correct in his assumption that the chances of Yagami Light being Kira were slim to none. L had long turned that over in his mind, but that five percentage probability would not leave his thoughts. There were coincidences where matters smoothed themselves over almost too perfectly, little gaps where if details went one step further, it would give one away. Marks of a brilliant young mind, either in that of Light or Kira, that had a plan, but not the years of plotting that serial killers could exhibit.

Brilliance of deduction took sugar to fuel, and so L was quick to snatch up one of the cinnamon sticks the instant that the bag was opened to his prodding finger. And then a second as L proved Matsuda's conclusion correct in craving and consuming the pastries. Chewing on the first, a long process that sucked it inch by inch into his mouth, he turned eerily shadowed eyes to Matsuda and blinked slowly.

The answer, smothered by the presence of the cinnamon stick on his tongue, presented itself soon enough in the arrival of Light at the precise time that he schedule would have dictated. L wondered briefly whether this was to his prediction, as he was certain to have been noticed even from the window. It would have been easy for Light to speak with a classmate and take a different route under the guise of speaking on assignments, but he had chosen to stick with his defined route without the shield of an uninvolved person and discussion about chemistry.

"Yagami-kun, it is good to see you," he greeted after swallowing the final bite of the cinnamon stick. "Things have, unfortunately, kept me away from classes, but I hear you have been maintaining stellar attendance and grades, as expected." L held out his hand with the second pastry nabbed from Matsuda. "Join us for a cinnamon stick?"

The presences of Aizawa and Matsuda had not been forgotten, though L intentionally did not refer to them or introduce them at that moment. He was curious as to what Light would do in their presence, or if he would pursue his own confession of being L from the ceremony.

Things keeping him from classes, indeed. It was obvious that L had applied to Tokyo U soley to watch him and monitor his behavior, and Light was tempted to call him out on his behavior just for the sheer hell of it, but managed to restrain the impulse.

"You're too kind, Ryuuga-kun," he thanked him mildly. "You should try to attend more often; it's dull without you around."

Turning to glance at the one at L's left side, Light examined the situation. He didn't know why L had brought others with him to see him, but he wasn't about to ask to find out. That would give L one up over him; it was better if he could get the information freely volunteered.

Turning, Light cast a lingering glance over the youngish inspector he had seen with his father before, smirking to himself. Perhaps this wouldn't be so hard after all.

"And I'd love a cinnamon stick, thanks, if the offer still stands."

Bypassing the extended stick L held out, Light reached over to take one from the bag, trailing a finger over the back of the police man's hand as he pulled it out. Hiding his amusement at the young man's reaction, Light slid it into his mouth, keeping his gaze locked with that of the younger detective. It was likely L would see through this, or at least suspect him of having alternate motives, but it would be fun to ignore him nonetheless. After all, Light wasn't about to play by anyone's rules but his own.

Besides, flirting was fun.

"Ryuuga, who's your friend?" Light's tone was playful, suggestive, his eyes still locked on the younger detective's, fully ignoring L. "D'you think he'd like to be my friend too?"

Aizawa had the distinct feeling that something was going on that was going WAAAAY over his head. Unfortunately, this was not an unfamiliar sensation when L was around. That was the way of geniuses, he reminded himself. They wouldn't be geniuses if normal people could understand what they were doing.

Like right now, with L and Light. Their words sounded so friendly...and yet there was this strange sort of tension under the surface of it. Was it just because L suspected Light? Or was there something else? The two had obviously met as university classmates. Had something happened between the two of them during the opening ceremony? Just like L to keep information like that to himself. He claimed to trust the inspectors working with him, but his behavior certainly didn't reflect any measure of trust.

Aizawa's eyes bugged out as Light took the cinammon stick, obviously flirting with Matsuda. Light-kun is GAY? Oh man, the Chief is gonna FLIP. Matsuda? He could definitely see Matsuda being gay, but Light was too popular with the ladies to be anything but a shock.

"D'you think he'd like to be my friend too?" Oh God, he was a BAD flirt too. Aizawa looked away in an effort not to snicker. This was ridiculous.

L let his offer linger another few seconds before the cinnamon stick was pulled back and placed between his own lips, reclaimed lest it be spoiled and left as though unwanted. No pastries would ever wont for attention with his appetite for sweets, any slack of consumption taken up by the slouched detective.

The flirtatious display was watched with some interest as L finished off the second cinnamon stick, wiping the sweet and sticking coating off of his fingers and onto his jeans distractedly. The question was whether this could be an honest reaction, or a facade that Light chose to challenge his appearance and have him be the first to reveal an ulterior purpose in this otherwise chance meeting.

L could have played along with the challenge, but a smothered snicker from Aizawa told him that the false overtures would not withstand the brunt of reality, or disbelief by the two police inspectors in their company.

Unfazed by the homosexual undertones of Light's advances, L looked between Matsuda and the university student, dark eyes settling on the latter with an intent look. "Yagami-kun, I believe that you know this person well enough without introduction," he murmured, cocking his head to the side. "And please do not feel the need to flirt with either he or his companion --" a short nod was given in Aizawa's direction, "-- as neither will relinquish their names in this public of a location."

L tapped his fingers against the worn knees of his jeans, unblinking as he stared at Light, gauging every little response. "You also know why that is," he offered, the challenge spoken in a deadpan tone. L wanted to know how much Light had deduced about Kira or, if his five percent probability was correct, how much Kira would be willing to let them know about his method of killing with but a name and a face.

Eyes widdening when he recognized the figure heading towards them, Matsuda rocked back on his heels once, beaming and giving a small wave. It was Yagami Light, the chief's son. Matsuda had met him a couple of times, but hadn't really gotten the chance to talk with him, since Yagami-san was really serious about his studies. He figured Yagami-san would remember him, but it would appear that even that was too much to ask, since Yagami asked Ryuuzaki what Matsuda's name was.

But what was sadness quickly turned into a flustered confusion as Yagami-san took a pretzel and let his hand linger on Matsuda's, and then the hand was gone but Yagami's eyes remained on Matsuda even as he ate the pretzel, causing the detective's face to turn bright red. The blush intensified when Yagami asked if Matsuda would be his friend too, and in such a tone of voice...!

"Ya-Yagami-san!" Matsuda exclaimed, "I... you... the Chief..." Becoming increasingly flustered, he spun around when he heard Aizawa snicker. The flush spreading down to his neck, Matsuda busied himself with taking the remaining pretzel stick and shoving it in his mouth so he couldn't make a bigger fool of himself.

Light's lips twitched in amusement, both at other man's snicker and Matsuda's blush. He'd gotten the desired reaction from both L and Matsuda. It was a small victory at best, provoking them to respond, but he savored it nonetheless. "Raito-kun, please," he told Matsuda, smirking, before turning to look at L.

"I wasn't aware the goal of flirting with someone was solely to learn someone's name, Ryuuga-kun," Light commented, non-committal, "but I can see your point. Better safe and not reveal your name to anyone then hope Kira's not around."

L's ambiguous manner and veiled challenges were irksome, Light decided. Mentioning the fact Kira needed a name so idly was painfully obvious, and annoyed him that L thought Kira would be so stupid as to volunteer knowing more information than that. Also, it was one thing just to bother him under his suspicion that he was Kira, but to drag two others along to witness it? Light wondered what exactly he was after.

"Though, logically, as Kira's only killed criminals and those trying to stop him, you should be the only one blatantly concerned with being targeted, unless you've heedlessly dragged others investigating the case out into the open," he said, idly offering Matsuda the other half of his own cinnamon stick as the flushed man finished his own. "One might wonder at your motives, Ryuuga-kun. If you insist on thinking that I'm Kira, wouldn't it be amoral to put the others at any risk, names or not?"

The high risk L had taken in coming out to the campus was clear to Light, as was L's motive in doing so. Light wasn't about to ask one of the men to the side to confirm his identity as L; that was likely the reason L had dragged them out here in the first place. It was clear that he planned to try to extract some sort of clue from him before leaving, and Light was mildly intrigued to see how he would attempt to do so.

"So, why are you out here, then?" Light asked pleasantly, still watching Matsuda, glancing over at the gangly detective every so often. "Somehow I doubt the famous L felt like attending his classes for once."

Watching both the other men's reactions closely as he dropped the name L, Light wondered not for the first time just what it was that L hoped to get from this exchange. He was on Light's turf, clearly the one at risk, and if Light played his cards right, surely he could come out on top.
