[Compile] Temp!Ryuk, Light, Yoruichi, Rukia

The cat's interest in Ryuk didn't go unnoticed. Nor did her bizarre actions and the fact that her companion didn't see to have a timeline. Ryuk hovered forward to neatly snag the apple as it fell.

He took the apple and sunk his teeth messily into it, chewing it noisely as he basked in the long-denied pleasure that had been waved in front of his nose for more than his patience might allow.

"Another shinigami?" Ryuk commented, wiping his mouth with a feather-lined arm. "I've been seeing a lot of your kind in Karakura."

On hindsight, Yoruichi supposed that it would be quite foolish of her to assume that the killer shinigami would not possibly know what she probably was.

Watching intently as the creature’s razor sharp teeth devoured the blood red fruit in large bites, the feline’s eyes narrowed. This shinigami was the enemy of her kind, and ranked even lower on the likeability scale than the Hollows. As unimpressed as she had been with Soul Society, she still possessed some of their core values, and one of them was to despise these…abominations, the Death Gods who consumed human lives instead of guiding them.

It didn’t help that they were their predecessors; in fact, that knowledge probably rubbed salt into the wounds of the prideful warrior shinigami.

Deciding to speak, Yoruichi kept her voice significantly neutral, meeting the killer shinigami’s eerie eyes as she addressed him. “Is that why you’re here?” Did he sense the spiritual power gradually gathering in Karakura town, somehow?

As far as she knew, the killer shinigami had kept a rather low profile in order not to provoke the attention of their warrior counterparts, and if this one had decided to come out of hiding, and eat an apple so calmly in full view of both shinigami, it meant that he either a) was not very intelligent, b) had full confidence in his own powers, or c) had someone backing him up.

Someone like Aizen.

If Aizen could enlist the aid of the Menos Grande, he probably approached the killer shinigami as well, right? The enemy of an enemy was a friend, and all that crap.

However…something didn’t fit. What about the boy, then? What part did he have to play in this?

Continuing her line of questioning nevertheless, she added, “Did Aizen send you?”

With another pause, luminous yellow eyes shifted to the young man beside the shinigami, discreetly absorbing every detail and filing it away for future use. Yoruichi felt a spark of curiosity as she remembered the calm, casual way he addressed them and his companion. Just how much did this…Light know?

Direct questions were best, the Shihouin heiress decided, posing her next question to the creature, but focusing on Light all the same. She had no patience for beating around the bush, especially when a killer shinigami was hanging around a human and looking more like his pet than anything instead of simply taking his life.

“And this boy… another prey of yours?”

Trapped between irritation that Ryuk had revealed his name -- unfounded irritation, for he had used Ryuk's name first, and thus should not practice hypocrisy -- and irritation that the spirit-girl was stubbornly refusing to acknowledge Ryuk's existence or respond satisfactorily to his overture, Light ran over his options again, not allowing his emotions to show in the pleasant expression that he kept fixed on his face as the cat batted at the apple in his outstretched hand.

If she was determined to continue pretending that she knew nothing and was unwilling to reveal herself as being privy to knowledge of his shinigami or the strange happenings in the world around them, so be it. He had no intentions of wasting his time further or revealing anything beyond his given name -- which would be of little use in finding him, given how unusual the kanji which compromised its construction was -- if he was going to learn nothing in return.

About to dismiss the girl and the unpromising confrontation at last, Light was halted only just in time by Ryuk's words. Another shinigami? 'Your kind'?

Shinigami that were not, then, of Ryuk's kind? Light struggled to contain his excitement, and his dismay. This was incredible -- this was something he absolutely must know about, if it was going to affect him, and judging from Ryuk's behavior, it well might -- but it was also proof that Ryuk had continued to conceal vital information from him.

He was formulating his own interjection into this when the recipient of Ryuk's words -- with Ryuk hovering just in front and to the side of him, Light had through that his shinigami was addressing the girl, the same way he had been -- spoke.

When the cat spoke.

"The cat … talked," Light murmured before he could quite stop himself; in his startlement, his features showed the truth of his emotions, pure astonishment finally making him as young as he truly was.

"You talked," he repeated, blinking as he processed this information, only belatedly taking in the feline's words as he reached out a hand towards black-furred ears in curiosity.

"Who's Aizen?" he asked without preamble. The question of his position as Ryuk's prey or not was not one he was inclined to tackle at this moment without knowing the position of this other shinigami, who seemed so very un-shinigami-like; better to let Ryuk answer that one.

The warrior Shinigami’s words had surprised her, though that he had said anything at all wasn’t entirely unexpected. She knew that he could see her just as clearly as she could him, but to have this new defense she’d tried to build up toppled by his offhanded statement simultaneously toppled her pride, making her feel exposed, uncertain as to what her next move should be.

She didn’t know if Yoruichi could sense this, but regardless, it was her that made said move, and made Rukia recognize something herself.

She didn’t know who this… other Shinigami and the boy were allied with. The latter’s response of “Who’s Aizen?” only affirmed her slight suspicion that neither of the two had had any interaction with the former Shinigami captain. The pair of them was strange and motley; this she would never doubt. But strange and motley did not necessarily mean evil… or, in this case, affiliated with an evil like Aizen’s.

Still, Rukia refused to trust them completely. She and Yoruichi had reached a point in their interaction with the other two where communication was a must, though it didn’t mean she had to tell them everything she knew.

“Yes. The cat spoke.” The way Rukia said it made it seem as though it was obvious, that she always associated with talking felines. “She’s a prominent figure in Soul Society and is currently in an alternate form.

As for Aizen Sousuke… he’s another prominent figure, but one in the worst way possible. He no longer resides where Yoruichi and I came from, and clearly you aren’t aware of who he is…”

Rukia swallowed. There was no way the boy, who Rukia had concluded to be suspicious by nature, would accept what she would say next, especially seeing as Rukia didn’t entirely trust him herself. But as far as she was concerned it was a truth and something that need to be said, and if by saying it she would be prolonging her communication with the strange duo… well, better communicating with her than with Aizen.

“…but please believe me when I say that Aizen is by no means a person to be trusted.”
