Tell me would you kill to save for a life?
Tell me would you kill to prove you're right?
Crash, crash, burn let it all burn
This hurricane is chasing us all underground.
No matter how many deaths that I die, I will never forget
No matter how many lives I live, I will never regret
There's a fire inside this heart and a riot about to explode into flames
Where is your God? Where is your God? Where is your God? ...
Do you really want?
Do you really want me?
Do you really want me dead?
Or alive to torture for my sins?

Name: Neku Sakuraba
Fandom: The World Ends With You
Timeline: Week 2, day 7
Age: 15
Appearance: Neku's taller than most kids his age, and has a diligent disregard for the changing trends of Shibuya. He has short, messy orange hair and wears a pair of huge headphones that never leave his head. The collar of his sleeveless shirt is high, and he often uses it to hide in. For this reason, his character design's eyes are very expressive as you rarely actually see his mouth. Neku wears a pair of baggy white shorts and skater shoes to pull the negligent ensamble together.
Abilities: He's a normal human, but utilizing special pins can use many different psychic attacks. The pins allow him to do everything from reading people's minds to using pyrokenisis.
Personality: At the beginning of the game, Neku hated the world. He wore his headphones to block it out, preferring to live in his own head. He never trusted people, and wished that the world would just leave him alone. He is quoted as wanting the world to "shut the hell up", and saying "All the world needs is me". At first, his harsh views of the world and his dislike of other people kept him alientated from the people who tried to befriend him even with their best efforts. Over the course of the first week spent with Shiki as his partner though, he begins to accept that he has to trust his partner in order to survive.
Very slowly, his view began to change, if only for the sake of those around him. Neku is sarcastic and occasionally nasty, though he does make an attempt at being polite and decent. He has a sharp wit, and an even sharper mind. On Day 2 of Week 2 he was able to give Joshua the square root of 3 up to the 7th decimal point. He also knew the periodic symbol for gold. It is believed by some fans that Neku has a photographic memory. He's good at solving puzzles and extremely persistent. He hates to be in debt to anybody despite his distaste at the thought of sacrificing for someone else's sake. He has come to trust both Shiki and Joshua, despite the fact that the latter grated on his nerves upon their first meeting. Neku is willing to give people a chance, though he might not show it at first.
Despite himself, Neku wants to do the right thing. He doesn't have many strong opinions, and is generally very neutral with other people. Neku is a private person; he's easily embarrassed in a social setting, and is a bit awkward in general. He'll lie if it helps him in a situation, or if he's too shy to admit the truth.
History: Born and raised in Shibuya, Neku's very street-smart. He spends most of his freetime on the streets of the Udagawa district. It's likely that Neku grew up like any Japanese kid, going to school and struggling to keep up with the trends and the expectations of the school system. In one of the game's extra reports, written by the Composer's Conductor, it's revealed that Neku did in fact have one friend, but he died in an accident one day on the way to meet him in Udagawa. Most fans assume that it was from that point onward that Neku began to hate the world and shut everyone out.
Neku's life came to a screeching halt one day when he was looking at a street-tag in Udagawa done by his favorite graffitti artist; CAT. Two strangers in the midst of a gun-fight came upon him, and he was killed by a bullet from one of their guns. His murderer was in fact Yoshiya Kiryu, aka Joshua. Neku doesn't know this however, because Joshua took his memory of the incident and everything before it as his entry fee. From there on out, Neku was forced to participate in 'The Reaper's Game', which is simply referred to as "The Game" by those who are involved.
Players in the Reaper's Game pay an entry fee and then play a week long game to win a second chance at life. This game is often cruel and unfair, and almost always there are no winners at all. Each day, the players are given a mission via text-message and a timer is set on their hands. If they don't complete the task before the timer runs out, they are erased from existence. Another catch is that you must have a partner in order to participate. Anyone without a partner, or whos partner has been erased will only survive for a matter of seven minutes. Without his memories to guide him, Neku actually has no idea why there are strange monsters running around or even where he is. His first partner is a girl named Shiki who gave up her appearance in order to enter The Game.
Throughout the course of his first week in The Reaper's Game, Neku learns that he has no choice but to trust this girl in order to survive. Slowly but surely, he is forced to bypass his dislike of the human race as a whole. He's stubborn though, and even manages to go as far as almost killing Shiki at the end of the week when ordered to do so in order to stay alive. At the end of the ordeal when he and Shiki are declared the week's winners, they are hit with a nasty realization and told that only one of them will be allowed to come back to life. Neku agrees to let Shiki be the one, since she had so much to fight for and he can't even remember what it was like to be alive. After this though, he was given the opportunity to play the Reaper's Game a second time. He accepts, and they collect Shiki herself as his entry fee. Though he gets his memory back, he still cannot remember how he died.
When Neku finds himself at the scramble crossing in Shibuya again, he quickly looks around to find another player to forge a pact with. This is when he meets Joshua, who approaches him and forms a pact with him without his permission. He also slips up by using Neku's name twice before asking him to introduce himself. Neku doesn't catch it though. He proceeds to try to deter Neku from completing the daily missions repeatedly. Neku realizes early on that there's something very strange about Joshua in the fact that when he uses his player pin to scan people's thoughts, he can actually register Joshua's presence. It's part of the rules that players are unable to scan other players. When he scans his new partner, he sees a strange flashback of himself standing in front of the mural in Udagawa. Then he sees Joshua round the corner, a gun in his hand as he comes upon him.
This leads him to believe that Joshua may have been the one to end his life. Neku accepts that it is a moot point; because regardless, Joshua is his partner and without that, he's good as dead. When he finally confronts Josh about it, he neither confirms or denies the accusation. At the end of the week, when the hunt down Sho Minamimoto; that week's game master, he has a more clear memory of that day, and sees that Joshua was in fact shooting at Sho, and that he was caught in the crossfire. Joshua proceeds to take the brunt of Sho's suicide attack, saying to Neku: "But Neku... I thought you couldn't afford to lose. Give up on yourself, and you give up on the world."
Neku then comes to his senses back at the scramble crossing in front of Shibuya '104', the starting point for The Reaper's Game. He agreed to a final game, and his entry fee was all of the other players. He wakes up in tears, angry at himself for blaming Joshua for his death and determined not to waste his sacrifice. Neku remains unaware of the Composer's deception, and believes that it was Sho who killed him. It was from this moment that he was snatched.
Roleplay Sample - Log: Finding himself in a place that wasn't the scramble was more shocking than Neku expected it to be. He lifted his head and sat up with a start, eyes wide and startled. He groped for his pins, the panic building when he realized that he didn't even have his player pin. What kind of a sick joke was this?
The white walls were blinding, his head was pounding at the silence from the headphones on his ears. Getting to his feet, Neku looked around, eyes falling on the complex looking cellphone on the bedside table. He picked it up and turned it over. This wasn't his phone. His was about three years old; it didn't even have a camera. After fumbling with it for a few minutes, he'd figured out how to work most of the functions. This place looked and smelled like a hospital... Was he alive? That was impossible. He'd agreed to one more round of The Reaper's Game.
A pang of regret stabbed him from behind. Shiki's life and Joshua's sacrifice... if he was stuck here, wherever here was, then their sacrifices were in vain. And it was all his fault.
"Damn it...!" With determination, Neku turned his attention to the communication device.
Roleplay Sample - Journal: This isn't my phone...what the hell is going on? Shiki...? Joshua? No...they're both gone.
Where am I? I've gotta get out of here before the next mission happens... how am I even still alive? Hello? Somebody? I need to make a pact with somebody, fast!
