Character: Julius Monrey
Canon: Alice in the Country of Hearts
Point in canon: Post Volume Three
Age: Unknown (appears to be approximately 20 years old)
Personality: Julius Monrey is a neutral figure in Wonderland. As such, he does not approve of the war going on and avoids becoming involved in the matters of the other territories when at all possible. And that also means that he rarely interacts with the other inhabitants who are involved in the war. At the same time, a lot of the inhabitants of Wonderland avoid him and the Clock Tower, solely because of Julius' occupation as Clock Maker.
Most of the time, Julius wears a somewhat gloomy, deadpan expression. This, as well as his occupation, causes him to be considered somewhat of an outsider, that most of the inhabitants of Wonderland either hate or distance themselves from. He isn't very good at showing his emotions. In fact, there are times when it's clear that he has a bit of trouble being open about things, due to his generally closed nature. The people he interacts with the most are Ace, his assistant who helps him with his work from time to time and Mary Gowland, as well as Alice, when she comes to live with him.
He's incredibly serious about most things, especially his work. However, it's also clear that he hates his work as well, and that it greatly saddens him to see broken clocks brought to him.
And where Alice is concerned, he is something of a Guardian. He is protective of her, even when he doesn't show it, and he doesn't wish for any harm to come to her. As such, that's why he's always advising her and trying to keep her out of harms way when he can. It's also the reason he is loathe to tell her about his work, and explain some of the darker workings of Wonderland.
It isn't easy for him to connect to people, due to his occupation. However, when he does make connections, they are serious and important to him. Even in Wonderland, he seems to understand the importance of the inhabitants lives more than anyone, although he also puts extra weight upon the importance of Alice's well-being due to her being an Outsider with a heart. Like everyone else in Wonderland, he loves Alice because she is an Outsider. But he isn't so sure what kind of love it is that he feels for Alice. He only knows that he enjoys her company and that he wants to see what kind of love it is.
History: In Wonderland, there are four territories: the Clock Tower, the Amusement Park, the Hatter's Mansion, and the Castle. While the Clock Tower remains a neutral land, the other three are at war with each other. As the owner of the neutral Clock Tower, Julius Monrey refuses to get involved in the other territories' war. Because of his job as Clock Maker, it's important to him that he stays neutral.
However, when Peter White makes a deal with Nightmare and drags Outsider Alice Liddel into Wonderland, things get much more complicated for the Clock Maker. When she first arrives with Peter in Wonderland, it's at the Clock Tower. The white rabbit forces her to drink a strange medicine and take part in a "game" of sorts. By forcing her to drink the whole thing, Peter trapped Alice in Wonderland. The only way she can return now, is by interacting with the inhabitants of Wonderland over time. As she does, the bottle slowly fills back up. When it is full again, she can return. It's Julius who explains this to her, when he finds her inside his Clock Tower. At first, he vehemently tells her to leave. But as she explains, he realizes that she's an outsider, and allows her to stay there, in the Clock Tower, where she would be safest.
Since she is forced to stay here, Julius fills her in on the background of Wonderland, explaining a bit about each of the territories, the people in charge of them, and the war that is going on between them. He also tells her that it would be best if she doesn't get involved, as it is dangerous, and that their strange three-way tug-of-war battle could rage on for a long period of time and it has nothing to do with an Outsider such as herself. At the same time, he tries to calm her down, and help her understand the ways of their world so that she doesn't go running off in ignorance and get herself killed. At the same time, there are plenty of things he seems reluctant to tell her.
As she spends more time in Wonderland and meets more people, the bottle does begin to slowly fill.
However, after Alice sees what the inhabitants of Wonderland call "Afterimages" come and take away a clock - the only thing remaining after she sees a man die - she knows that there are things about this world that no one will tell her and she goes demanding answers.
She doesn't get them right away. But she does get a chance to to some things in order to earn her keep. She makes him coffee. And he uses a strict scoring method to keep tabs on her progress. It gives her the motivation to try harder and harder to get that perfect score. She asks if she can help him fix clocks, but he firmly denies her, saying he doesn't want her dirtying her hands. But one day, when she's out with Ace, she hears his heart - or more precisely, she hears a ticking sound, and starts to put the pieces together. Once more, she goes to Julius and demands to hear the truth, and this time, he tells her.
Unlike her, the inhabitants of Wonderland have clocks for hearts. Unlike her, when someone from Wonderland dies, their clock can be fixed and can be reborn as a new person. It is her heart that most of the inhabitants find so interesting about Alice. Unlike them, they know that she is important and irreplaceable. But it is because of this system that most people in Wonderland hate the Clock Maker. After all, it is Julius who takes the clock that had once been their dead friend's heart and fixes it, only to have it be reborn into someone else. That's why the inhabitants of Wonderland don't see much value in their life, and don't mind putting themselves into danger. They see themselves as replaceable.
And the "shadows", or afterimages, assist him in collecting the broken hearts, as does Ace, one of the Knights from Heart Castle.
The truth terrifies Alice, and she runs from the Clock Tower. However, while it terrifies her, she doesn't take it out against Julius. She wants to show the people of Wonderland that they do have worth as people, and she wants to change their way of thinking. Returning to the Clock Tower, she admits that it scares her, but that she's not afraid of Julius. In fact, she notes that he always seems sad about his work, and says that he's like a God here. She tells him that she wants to stay. And although she can't help him with that sort of work, she agrees to do small things to make up for him allowing her to stay there and continue to make him coffee.
Julius also has a strange friendship with Mary Gowland, the owner of the Amusement Park, although only for the simple reason that Julius doesn't see fit to make fun of Gowland's name like the rest of the inhabitants do, because he really doesn't see the humor in everyone calling him merry-go-round. Because Gowland is so sensitive about the nickname, he is very fond of Julius for not making fun of it, and every so often, comes to have drinks with him at the Clock Tower.
While she's out, it's clear that Julius worries about her. At the same time, he tries to remain neutral. But like all of the inhabitants of Wonderland, he, too loves Alice. The only thing he isn't sure of is "how" he loves her. Although he knows he's putting her close to something she doesn't like - his work - he enjoys her company, and wishes for her to stay there, where she might be more safe.
But the Hatter, Blood Dupre comes to Julius, asking him to hand her over, with a gun. Although Blood fails, he forces Julius to think. If she was somewhere else, the others could protect her much better, even if she did get involved. And she wouldn't have to be around his work anymore. So he tries to push her away. She's upset that he doesn't seem to want her to stay anymore, because she, too, had come to enjoy his company, and she almost agrees at first. But then she admits her true desire to stay there, and Julius doesn't have the heart to argue with her.
Abilities: He is capable of handling a gun although he's not particularly talented at it. And he is a very capable of working with and fixing clocks.
Items brought along: Only his tools that he uses to repair clocks.
Stigma: Julius' stigma is his job as Clock Maker or "Undertaker" of Wonderland. He hates being in charge of people's lives like that when he doesn't approve of the way Wonderland works.

[The man turns on the device, wearing a rather sour expression, eyes narrowed slightly.]
What is this? I demand answers. Where is Alice?!
[Turning away from the device, it seems he thinks it's been turned off.]
No... the real question is... where am I? I'm worried. I'm sure she'll be fine as long as she stays in the Clock Tower, but the ones I don't trust are the ones after her. Who knows what those fools will do if they realize I'm gone... I have to get back as soon as I can.
Log Post:
What an odd appearance. Long, dark blue hair is tied back in the middle with a golden ribbon, and he's wearing fancy attire: a long black and gold jacket, long black pants and a finely designed vest in varying shades of gold and dark green. On one ear, he has a clock-shaped earring, and a matching necklace with a clock on it. While it's clear he has a deep connection to clocks, what the connection is isn't so clear.
He brushes himself off, sour expression hardly changing, as he looks around. This isn't his home. It is no Clock Tower, Amusement Park, Mansion or Castle, that's for sure. No. It's a... as the sign says... 'bus station'. Those words mean nothing to him. He looks perplexed, eyes narrowing, as he shifts his gaze to the bag at his feet. He's hesitant to take it. Who knows what manner of things might be inside.
Even so, he knows that time is of the essence, and he has to be going if he's going to hurry. Picking up the bag gently, he carries it with him dilligently as he leaves the station, eyes constantly darting around. It's a habit. Julius is uncertain about going outside. After all... one must always watch out for uncertain danger.
