Well - I just got back from the contra dance I found on the web, and it was fantastic! The Toronto Country Dancers (
http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/~tcd/) are wonderful. It seems that tonight was the start of their season, so lots of people were all happy to see each other, which was nice, though it made me feel a little awkward for "intruding", as it were.
They had live music from Anne Lederman and Tom Leighton; and it was just brilliant fun. Everyone was really friendly, and parallels with the Cambridge dancers were unavoidable... I got asked to dance very consistently throughout the evening, and there were some really good dancers there! A fair amount of twirling, a fair amount of bouncing, not much yelling or whooping or clapping, but then, I supplied that. Also a fair amount of perving, but nowhere near my intolerance limits!
Oh, and I managed to find the Jim of this contra scene - go me... Or not. A bit older (like thirty years older than me at least), a bit(!) pervy, a bit clingy, knows everything that's going on, and is determined to take me to swing dancing, Irish set, Scottish ceilidh and another contra before I leave. To that end, I come home with his phone number. Oy.
Otherwise, I fit right in with them all - to the point that I was assigned a newbie to teach to waltz by a tip of the head in my direction...
Heh. Good night all!
