Sam stares at the horse in shock and bewilderment, unable to say a word. After a few moments, Sam finds his voice and stammers," You can talk."
"Of course, mortal," the horse replies with what could only be described as an equine grin. "If I couldn't talk, we wouldn't be having this conversation."
"Why didn't you say anything before?"
"You never said anything worth commenting on," the horse answers.
"What are you?" Sam asks in wonder.
In response, the horse seems to shimmer and immediately changes into an attractive humanoid feline wearing western clothing that is almost of parody of his own.
Caught out in the rain, the cat girl suddenly lets out a shriek and dives under the rock, seeking shelter from the storm.
"I'm wet!" she wails in disgust. "I hate being wet!"
"You didn't mind when you were a horse," Sam observes.
"Yes, but that's when I was a horse! Horses don't mind standing out in the rain!"
Affectionately wrapping her arms around him, the cat girl squeezes Sam tightly and begins rubbing against him and purring.
"Ooh, you're nice and warm," she giggles.
"Excuse me," Sam says nervously, "but could you not do that?"
"Why shouldn't I? We can share body heat and stay nice and warm," the cat girl responds.
"Where I come from, proper women don't do that," Sam complains.
"Who says I'm a proper woman?" she replies with a seductive purr.
"What are you, anyway?"
"My name is Feliana. I'm a Pooka!" she states proudly.
"A what?"
"A Pooka. We're a very special kind of Faerie..."
Although Sam has some trouble following the conversation, the gunslinger learns that Pooka are a race of tricksters and shapechangers who can assume the form of any animal. Although a bit nervous having such a strange and attractive woman become so familiar with him, Sam allows Feliana to take turns keeping watch as the two of them attempt to catch some sleep.
The next morning, Sam has an idea on how to defeat the robber baron and his knights, and asks Feliana to change into a hawk so that she can find Sir Spindle and ask for help.
Meanwhile, Sam performs an experiment by searching for places where his bullets work normally, tying red handkerchiefs to the trees and marking the boundaries between zones where the laws of physics work differently.
Sir Spindle and Penny Farthing arrive later that evening with Feliana, and with their help organizes the populace against the Baron and his knights.
Sam tells them about the American Revolution, how his people won political and economic freedom from tyranny and how the United States has become a model for liberty and justice across the world. Turning the tables on both the Baron and his knights, Sam and his friends trick them into fighting him on his own terms, chasing Sam Smith into a place where gunpowder works and defeating the Baron and his knights in combat.
With the Baron removed from power, Sam and his friends follow the enchanted compass toward their next destination while the local bards and storytellers spread the word of his exploits, establishing his reputation as a hero.
