Sam has no idea how long it’s going to take to hit the bottom of the Cage, and he doesn’t know if bracing himself for the collision will help or hurt; after a while he decides to simply stay limp. Michael angel-ported himself away almost as soon as they fell past the lip of the hole, so he can’t use the other archangel to cushion the landing, although he's glad that Adam isn't going to be trapped with him. He loses track of time pretty soon after he tumbles into the hole in Stull Cemetery, so he doesn’t know how long it is before he feels an initial tug like something is trying to pull him in. He can still hear Lucifer raging in the back of his mind, but the archangel knows Sam’s how futile taking back control would be now. Sam allows himself a smile; he did it, he beat Lucifer.
Sam’s thoughts are interrupted by a feeling like someone has reached through his skin and tried to jerk out all his internal organs. Lucifer is screaming “NO!” in the back of his mind, but his voice is getting fainter. The archangel’s voice disappears entirely with a sharp tearing sound and pain whites out Sam’s vision for a moment. He can hear two voices screaming in the background, and he realizes dully that one must be his.
When Sam opens his eyes again he realizes that he is no longer falling through black emptiness; he is surrounded by stars and strangely purple-looking space. He twists and turns, reveling in the silence Lucifer has left behind as he tries to figure out where he is. In the distance he can see a figure coming towards him, someone else who looks to be falling.
