In Plain View

“Casey, you wanna get out of here?” Zeke asked, ignoring Casey’s dad completely.  Zeke held his breath while he waited for Casey’s answer and when Casey replied with a simple yet staunch “Yeah,” Zeke’s heart did a little flip inside his chest.

“I’m sorry about my Dad,” Casey apologized, trying to work out why Zeke had come to his rescue.

They had not even really spoken since the whole Marybeth thing, which seemed crazy to Casey since essentially it had been him and Zeke alone at the end.  You’d think they’d be closer.  Casey wished he knew what Zeke was thinking, he had no idea how much of Casey’s ‘I’m gay and proud’ speech Zeke had actually heard if any.

“It’s fine,” Zeke said, looking down at his feet.

“You’re lucky your parents are away so much,” Casey said, not sure what else to say.

“Maybe,” Zeke replied.

The night was too quiet; the only sound was the constant fall of their footsteps.  Zeke didn’t really seem very responsive to Casey’s attempts at conversation, so Casey used the heavy silence between them to study Zeke’s profile.

Zeke looked so serious and Casey really wished he knew what was going on inside the handsome head that he couldn’t stop admiring.  If Casey wasn’t careful, his lustful thoughts about Zeke were gonna get his ass kicked. In the end he couldn’t stand the silence any more.  “Where are we going?” he asked.

“My place,” Zeke answered, surprising Casey.

“But…” Casey said, puzzled.
“What?” Zeke asked. He stopped and looked at Casey for the first time since they left his dad standing on their front lawn, shaking with fury.

“We’re going the wrong way,” Casey said, pointing out what he thought was obvious.

“No we’re not,” Zeke said, shaking his head in denial, before walking away, not waiting to see if Casey was following him or not. “I moved out.”

Stumbling after Zeke, his feet tripping over each other, Casey called out “You what?”

Stopping so suddenly that Casey slammed into his back, Zeke turned quickly putting out a hand to steady Casey.  “I moved out,” Zeke repeated slowly, as if talking to a child.

“Oh, you did?” Casey asked, surprised. “When?”

“Not long after the attempted alien invasion,” Zeke revealed, with a laugh.  “Man, that still sounds funny to me…alien invasion, even after what I now know.  It just makes me wanna laugh my ass off.”

“Yeah, I know what you mean. I killed Marybeth and saved the world…maybe…maybe not, but it doesn’t seem real at all.  It’s like none of it even mattered, so why the hell did we bother fighting at all,” Casey said in agreement.

“I think it’s because all of the robots in this town have no idea of how close they all came to biting the dust. They’re still living their same pathetic lives like nothing even happened, and what is worse, is so are we.  It’s totally fucked,” Zeke muttered kicking at a loose rock on the footpath.

“I’ve been have strange dreams,” Casey blurted out into the night air before he could stop himself.  God, he was an idiot!  First time in months Zeke spends sometime with him and he has to be ‘the weird kid’, like he can’t help himself or something. In his defence, Zeke was still touching him, which could possibly be the reason why his mouth suddenly wasn’t connected to his brain

“What?  Seriously, Case, do you always have to be such a freak?” Zeke asked, tilting his head on the side he appeared to be observing Casey.  “Okay, I’ll bite.  What have you been dreaming about?”

“Aliens,” Casey answered, without any hesitation.

“Figures,” Zeke snorted, stepping even closer to Casey.

Casey swallowed; his throat felt tight.  “In my dreams, they come back,” Casey whispered.

Touching Casey on the cheek softly, Zeke said, “That’s completely normal. I mean, I’ve had a couple of dreams myself, but, Casey, it’s over.  You need to let it go and man up.”

“No!  Sorry, but in my dreams they are coming for us…for you and me…for revenge.  I know it sounds…” Casey said, fading out.

“Crazy?” Zeke asked, letting his hand drop away from Casey’s face.  Zeke took a step back.

Casey felt cold without Zeke’s warmth surrounding him. Shivering, he answered, “Yeah.  That about sums it up.  I know how it sounds, but these dreams… they just feel so real. And sometimes I feel like I’m being watched, which yeah I know sounds completely paranoid, but…it’s like there’s always someone or something out there, you know?  It’s like a living, breathing thing and I feel like, I don’t know. I guess I feel like it’s waiting for something…it just scares me.”

“Casey…I…” Zeke said, giving Casey his back.  “There’s something I should…”

“Don’t worry about it,” Casey interrupted.  God, he was such a freak!  Even Zeke was trying to find a way to get clear of Casey’s madness.  He didn’t want to hear what Zeke was going to say, so he kept talking.  “I should probably talk to someone or something but it’s not like I can go to a shrink or anything.  Everyone in this town already thinks I’m mad as a hatter.  God, I wish I could just leave here.  Get away, I really need to…  Don’t worry I’m just losing it,” Casey joked, without any humor in his voice.

Zeke turned back to Casey and looked at him intently before speaking, “Maybe…maybe we should leave.  There’s nothing in this town for me…I…”

“We can’t just leave,” Casey said, shocked beyond words.  Zeke couldn’t be serious, could he?  And even if he was serious about leaving, as if he would want freaky Casey tagging along after him like some lovesick puppy.

“Why not?” Zeke asked, taking out a cigarette and lighting it.  “Well?” Zeke asked Casey, and Casey realized he couldn’t think of one good reason to stay, but he could think of about a million reasons to leave.

“There’s nothing here…”Casey mused out loud.

“Exactly!” Zeke said, sounding vaguely excited probably for the first time in his entire life.  “So let’s blow this town.”

“But…I…” Casey said, he looked at Zeke and tried real hard to think of something that would keep them both here, but nothing came to mind.  Who was he kidding anyway?  He wanted to run away with Zeke.  Hell, if Zeke asked him to he’d probably fly to the moon and back just because and all just because Zeke had asked.

“Okay,” Casey agreed, with more than just a little trepidation.
