Sea

This is an old piece that I wrote on July 3rd, 2006. I actually don't recall writing this but it was during a period where everything I wrote was scattered all over the place (this particular one I found on Myspace) so it isn't surprising that I would forget something like this. I re-read it and had a total "Holy Shit!" moment. To me it's a really powerful piece that, considering my writing skills of the time, is amazingly well written.

Sea
A small figure stood on a cliff staring out to sea. Her eyes tracked the crashing movements of the waves as they rushed to meet the rocks only to fall away again. The wind rustled her black lace lined silk Victorian dress as it rushed past her lone figure almost as if it would like nothing better than to lift her up and carry her away. Her once bright, silver-blue eyes now faded to a dull grey that echoed the pain eating a hole in her soul. Her pale skin stood out against the dark of night like a ghostly visitor.

For hours she stood, staring, wondering. What lay out there? Just beyond the sea line? Her eyes flickered skyward. What lay beyond the stars? Was it Heaven? Was there a Heaven? Her eyes returned to the crashing waves once more. Did Hell lay beyond the horizon? Was there a Hell? Did it lie beneath the sea? She didn't believe Hell could be all fire and brimstone.

The ribbons of her bonnet danced about her face joined by a few curls of her once golden hair, now the pale gold of corn silk that had escaped from their pins. She shut her eyes letting the salty sea air invade her senses, the slight spray of water from the waves below her where they crashed against their rocks, wash over her face and the crashing and rushing sounds of the waves upon said rocks filling her ears. She let the ocean invigorate her empty, cold soul. Opening her eyes she took that single little step forward and disappeared to meet the ocean.

Heaven or Hell be it.
