Noah just got his first time out.

I don't think he gets it yet. maybe he's too young.

i think we're hitting the terrible twos a little early.

First, I LOVE the Ames and Ilg books. Go to Amazon or wherever you like to buy books and search for them, they are short books and each is dedicated to one year of life. They are very very helpful and realistic, and truly I love them. Get the current year and the upcoming year.

Second, I also liked 1-2-3 Magic and How to Talk so Your Kids Will Listen... Neither one is completely "the" answer, but both have some great tactics. Yes-- he is too young for them now, but you can strategize for the future.

OK, now-- what we did: natural consequences work pretty well at Noah's age (or did for Sara.) You wanna throw shoes at the TV? Bye-bye TV! She recently (last month) threw a book at the computer monitor. She was restricted from the computer for a week. Noah is too young for a full week, and Sara really was, too. But I was pissed. I made a big sign that had her name on it (she recognizes that) and the red circle with the line thru it over her name, and taped it to the monitor. As a reminder. We also have put LOTS of toys in time out. When they have a favorite toy, this really really gets their attention. Also remember to boil things down to very short phrases. "We do NOT throw shoes in this house. No throwing. No throwing. Mommy is turning off the TV because Noah threw his shoes at it." etc.

But then you might not want to take advice from the mommy whose kid just got her hair cut by / cut the hair of another preschooler...
