Actually, I am breaking this into 2 different replies.... goddessdster August 19 2012, 02:01:17 UTC
I'm going to try to address this coherently, because I know what you're talking about, but it creates so many thinky thoughts that I don't know where to begin.

Begin with fandom, and get it out of the way. I recall seeing (and I can't even remember the fandom, but it probably applies to all of them) a long debate in which writers state they don't think they have to reply to feedback, as their story was a "gift" for which the feedback was a thank you. I wish I were making that up. Also, some people just suck. And we are neither of us "nobodies." We simply refuse to play the fandom game, wherein we would attach ourselves to vocally popular BNFs through flattery and praise, thus ensuring our place in the coveted inner circle. High School. The connections are empty and false and I don't have the energy to maintain that kind of facade.

What I have managed to do, through sincerity and sticktoitiveness, is make a hardcore group of awesome and amazing online friends. I met some of them because I write. I met some through chance. What I have tried to do is make sure I keep those relationships alive and vital because they are important to me. You can and will do the same. Unfortunately, you will also have to endure a lot of rude silence while it happens.

My insecurities are vast and deep and I fight with them more frequently than I wish I had to. They are what drives my reactions to the silence. Because when they are quiet and letting me be? I honestly don't give a fuck what a bunch of self-important, socially inept, online strangers think of me or my opinions or stories. It helps to remember I have a life outside, and friends and family who think I pretty much rock, and they actually know me.

The way to approach tumblr is to be as amused by it all as you can be. It helps to make sure you're following interesting people, which means starting out by following everyone, and then whittling it down. Also, to not care if your stuff is ever reblogged. Also, the more you post, the more others will follow you. Or you could just not do it *shrug* because what are you missing, really?
