So, after the longest week ever (not really, because the week before was the longest week ever and no week is the same), I spent Friday evening politely socializing with strangers invited to my parents', Saturday taking my niece to the Disney exhibit at the museum and for sushi, then playing one-racket tennisball with my nephew until the dinner of ( Read more... )

You know, I was just thinking...I haven't seen D around in a while and then here you are. Funny...

I don't really have anything exciting to say anyway...unless you count my "I want a dog (and new apartment)" jones coming back full throttle as exciting...really mostly frustrating.

Hope your week gets less crazy

HAHAHA! There is never less crazy!

I just got my official acceptance into the Counseling Education program, and I knew you were one of the few that would be really excited for me, so I wanted to share the good news.

I would love a dog and an apartment. Or a cat and and an apartment. Or just an apartment, even.

YAY! Thats awesome. You're going to focus on the micro side right? over the weekend I met with two of the interns from safe harbor, we're working on a project together...well basically we're creating and I guess fascilitating this whole new program and they're both getting their MSWs and we were talking about micro v. macro. and one felt like her heart was micro, but her head was macro and the other was opposite. It was just interesting because I feel similarly...I think my personality is suited more for the micro, but I think talent wise I;d really be better at the macro...i really just need to bite the bullet and look into the certification programs at vcu

oh and apartments are annoying...especailly finding one that you can afford and isn't in an area where bad things will probably happen to you or your property.

But I think you should totally get a cat...apartment or not.

Yeah, we don't really distinguish in Counseling, which is all micro, as opposed to SW, which can lead one to go the macro route. I think I chose counseling over Social work mostly because of this. I do understand that Social Justice issues are at the heart of an individual's issues, but whenever I sat and fantasized about my ideal professional life, I was helping individuals through direct service, not through policy administration; conversely, as important as I think the policy admin is, it's just not where my heart is.

ooh. Sorry, I didn't realize it was a seperate program...I'm not sure if VCU has a scrictly counseling program...it seems to be all wrapped up in the school of social work. I guess I just I assumed it would be the same anywhere else.

Most schools that offer an MSW (and therefore an opportunity to work towards an LCSW) would not offer a community counseling master's program, though they may have a school counselor education program in the education department. Ours is an offshoot of that, with the focus being on counseling theories, with each class dealing with a different population (crisis intervention - which I'm taking in the fall, substance abuse, marriage and family, play, etc), and multiple opportunities the practice skills.

There. You've now had your mini education on counseling. I'm going to go away now and try to work.
