whoa... do we seriously have a professor hunger-striking for racial equality at MIT? i am so boggled right now. choice quote: "I will either see the Provost resign and my hard-earned tenure granted at MIT, or I will die defiantly right outside his office." i. just. is this where i get glad this hasn't hit campus-wide email yet, and rethink, yet again, this academia thing?
in other exciting news, samosas rock my world.
also, while i was discussing recent developments concerning the T that i learned of while going places this weekend (fares are going up, the ticket-dispenser machine interface has changed to something less simple, and they're handing out RFID cards that will eventually completely replace/have cheaper fares than cash/temp tickets) it was brought to my attention the supreme twistedness of naming the new system after Charlie. apparently, once upon a time, a fellow was trying to get elected on the Progressive ticket in Boston, and as part of his campaign was against fare increases on the T, there was a song about
poor Charlie, who got on the T one day and found himself without the extra funds to get off. later released by the kingston trio*, i guess it is the most fame the T has ever received, but naming your new, extra-complicated, higher-fare schedule after it? fuck you, your mom's a whore. also, i'm buying a bike, dammit.
i appear to've reached about my tolerance for drama and sniping; internet drama that would usually entertain me just makes me click away, and i deleted a mildly vicious thread the other day without even reading it! now, if only i could focus on physics.
the insulation on my power cord has doomkitten teethmarks in it :(
also, while i'm a big fan of unexpected dorkiness, please do it competently? missing a reference to fermat's last theorem and giggling in the corner about 'hee, there are so many geeks here!' make me want to throw things at you. actually, fuck it, i hate people on the internet, i just hate them more when they claim to be things i probably am.
while the news of new and unimproved art in Archie comics may not leave you heartbroken, i'm pretty fuckin entertained by
improved_archie.
holy shit. so, i was going to leave this update til tomorrow for reasons, but i'm gonna hit post now b/c for other reasons, i'm posting from my windows box. which circumstantial evidence suggests i haven't logged in to since the beginning of term. everything is so small, and there's so much space!
*if you know this song and you're not boston-local, this is probably why. no, i'd never heard this song, or heard any other explanation for the name, and had assumed logic like 'charlie sounds like the name of a train engineer!'
