my partner in my production class has a nice audio setup. brand new imac with 4gb of ram, digi 002 with pro tools LE, and some gorgeous mackie monitors. what does he do with it all? nothing. he uses the imac and the monitors to listen to all of the jam band shit he has. how much money is he wasting there? well, the digi 002 with pro tools retails for over a grand, the imac with 4gb of ram? i'm sure he went through apple on the ram, meaning he probably paid the price of a low end mac pro for that. don't even ask me about the mackie monitors.

why do i care? well, number one he's my partner with the powerful recording setup and he hasn't done SHIT with it to help the production of these two tracks run smoothly. he hasn't done much at all really. number two, i'm starting to need a more efficient setup for my own endeavors. number three, i'm legitimately worried for this guy (and tons of other people i've met in my stint at columbia). his parents payed for a MAJORITY of this stuff (not that that's all bad, because i know people who actually DO something with the stuff they get, but to set this thing up so you can get high and listen to music? that's seriously about a $5,000 luxury). he's graduating next semester and during our recording sessions has proved twice over that he is an incompetent boob job (well, he DID have a nice idea on vocal overdubs). but what's he going to do once he's out? how's he going to function?

this is a guy who promised to perform a particular task in pro tools (albeit minor and minuscule) and when the time came to see if he had done it, to make sure our session ran smoothly, he tells me he didn't do it because he "didn't know how". with the internet and with the large amount of resources available at school, he can't spend five minutes to find out? of course, this is the same week where i have to put all the sheet music together for the session musicians (because my partner does not know and has no desire to learn music theory), by far the most stressful part of the whole process. i gave him these little tasks, because a) he took a class on the god damned program we're using and b) to give him something to do with that wonderful setup he's got.

the good news is, i think it's turning out well haha.
