When Wally wakes up, Dick isn't in the bed with him anymore, which tends to happen often enough because Dick isn't as lazy as the average teenager should be. The superspeed makes Wally less lazy than most, because he always wants to move, and then there is Dick, that just feels like he has to do something most of the time.

Wally gets up without putting on any shirt and stretches quickly before going to Dick's kitchen.

"Hey."

Dick doesn't look up and moves his head in what is probably supposed to be some sort of answer. He does that when he' busy, and, well -- he's busy cooking.

That's good, really, because food would be appreciated five minutes ago.

Wally peaks over Dick's shoulder. "What are you doing?"

"French toast."

A face. "Why?"

"For breakfast."

Wally zooms away and comes back. "It's one."

"Yeah, we went to sleep at five."

"We can't eat breakfast at one."

"We just woke up, we're eating breakfast."

"I don't want to eat breakfast at one."

Dick sighs and turns the slice of bread over in the pan. "Well, you can fake we're eating French toasts for lunch is you want."

"Diiiick."

"You also don't have to eat anything," Dick says, amused.

"But I'm hungry."

"I know."

"You're mean."

"Because I'm making breakfast for the two of us? Oh, yeah, evil here," Dick answers with a smirk.

He removes the toast from the pan and puts it over the small stack forming in a place just by because putting a new soaked toast in the pan.

Wally doesn't say anything and Dick thinks he's come to accept that he'll be eating breakfast at -- horror -- one, until he feels Wally's lips on his shoulder. He's about to state that kissing him isn't going to change anything when he feels teeth scraping slighting and Wally begins nibbling while mumbling a low 'nomnomnom'.

"Are you eating my shoulder?"

"Yes."

Pause.

"I'm hungry," Wally says, as if it explained it.

"Well. Okay then." Dick turns the toast over.

"You were supposed to react more than this."

Dick lets out a chuckle. "Well I don't mind you eating my shoulder. Not my kink, but--"

Wally smacks him. "I'm still hungry."

"What a coincidence, French toasts are ready."

Wally glares at Dick's back as he's taking out extra plates and forks. He puts a couple of toasts in one and looks for syrup before he starts eating.

"If you don't wanna eat any, I don't mind eating them all y'know."

Nothing happens for a second, and then Wally makes himself a plate at superspeed and starts munching on the food.

When Wally appears in front of him, effect or arriving at superspeed, Dick startles and takes a step back.

"Did I just surprise you?"

Dick rolls his eyes. "Of course you did, you just appeared from out of nowhere."

Wally frowns, obviously skeptical. "Uh, you don't usually get surprised."

"What?"

"Yeah, uhm. You just go all: 'Oh I knew you were coming and I'm still all serious'."

"I'm not as bad as I was about the serious."

"Aaand... It makes you get surprised more easily?"

"Exactly."

Silence.

"Dick?"

"Uhm?"

"Are you just saying that to try and get me to back off?"

Dick can't help the half-smile forming on his lips. "Maybe just a little."

Of course, acknowledging this is not going to make Wally back off at all.

"Is something wrong?"

Dick shrugs. "Not really, just tired. It happens."

Wally raises both his eyebrows and makes a really good No-Shit-I-Told-You-So face. "I don't get how you're not exhausted more often." Dick goes to school and patrols nearly every night of the week, after all.

"Practice," Dick answers, which doesn't really answer anything at all.

Wally really isn't convinced of anything. "Are you going to patrol tonight?"

"Yeah."

A Look.

"But not for long," Dick adds.

"Just stay here. Sleep. C'mon." Wally smiles, making the semi-order a suggestion. It makes it hard for Dick to answer at all.

"You're hesitating," Wally says proudly, poking Dick's shoulder.

Dick winces, and Wally's smile vanishes.

"Are you hurt?"

Dick is getting worse and worse about lying to Wally. Compared to Tim or Bruce, he was never really good at all, but he could keep up with the 'I'm fine's before. He can't anymore, and it's not like Wally would believe him. He would only make puppy eyes if Dick tried lying and they already talked about how Wally doesn't want him to hide when he's hurt before. It's just hard to follow through with that. Hiding weaknesses is always easier.

"Yeah, but it's really no big deal," Dick says finally. And it's true: he's bruised. Sure, he's bruised pretty badly and his shoulder is sort of very purple-ish-blue-green, and it hurts constantly, but there's nothing he can do other than wait for it to heal by itself and it's not dangerous. It's a bruise, it happens, he's not invulnerable and he doesn't heal.

"What do you mean 'it's not a big deal'? You're wincing and it's taking enough of your attention that I caught you off guard. It's not not a big deal."

Dick doesn't really know what to answer, because maybe (maybe) Wally is a little right, which means he's going to resort defensively to emotional blackmail. "Why don't you trust me when I say that something's fine. I know my own body better than you do."

"I know it pret -- uhmmmmm..."

Dick wouldn't have blushed if Wally hadn't. But Wally does and there's suddenly an awkward silence setting in. They're going to get used to it all -- to the 'reality of the situation' -- at some point. It's just... too soon, still.

At least, the statement makes the situation less tense.

"It's really okay, y'know. It's just a bruise," Dick mumbles finally.

Wally presses his lips together, not quitting. "Can I see it?"

There's no way answering 'no' can end up well, so Dick sighs and removes his shirt. He doesn't even wince when he raises his arms to do so.

"It looks hideous," Wally says, his tone clearly saying 'what is your problem, this doesn't look fine at all'.

"I bruise easily."

Wally purses his lips together and wrinkles his eyebrows while Dick puts his shirt back on.

"Can you stop being an idiot and take a night off?"

"I'm not --"

"Yes you are."

"No I'm not."

"Yes you are."

"No I'm --"

"Ohmygod! Batman and Tim would understand, you're not letting anyone down. Will you just stay in tonight?"

Dick stares and pouts, and Wally grins and takes his hand in his.

"I'll be really annoying if you don't."

"You're annoying already."

"Too bad for you I guess, still stuck with me."

A beat. "Okay," Dick says, "but only tonight."

"Nice!"

"And I'm sending Tim a message to tell him he can still reach me if there's trouble."

"Sure, whatever." Wally pecks him on the cheek and lets his hand go so that Dick can take out his communicator and do whatever he wants to do. When Dick's done, Wally is still smiling at him. "We can make it a popcorn and movie night."

"Did you make me stay so we could have a date?"

"I'm not making you stay. And you have to rest. And it'd not a date if we stay at your place." He's used to Dick, and something like this really isn't enough to take away his good mood. "What else would you be doing, anyway? Were you going to go to sleep right away?"

"No," Dick admits.

"So, there, popcorn and movie."

They end up getting pizza, and Dick feels himself fall asleep halfway through the movie. Wally sees it coming. "We could move to your bed." He's a little hesitant and Dick doesn't understand right away. A moment later he does: it's the 'we', it's the fact they're still not used to this. The question isn't really if Dick wants to move to his bed, but whether if Wally can come, too.

"You don't have to ask," Dick answers, and it's corny but whatever. They'll need to be corny at least a little to make this good.

A few minutes later, Dick is lying on his side, on his shoulder that is still very much intact, and Wally is hugging him loosely, careful not to hurt him. Dick surprises himself when he realises that something so simple is making him happy.

He really wants this to be good. He wants the awkward from the first time to go away.

He tightens his hold on Wally's waist and kisses his jaw a couple of times.

At least, he knows Wally wants the same thing. They'll manage.
