Cuss Words

Aug 28, 2005 16:02

Call them whatever you want. Cuss words, curse words, bad words, taboos, whatever. The thing I'd like to rant about is why we can't say them.

You're walking around your classroom and stub your toe against a desk. "#!@$," you scream instinctively. And then you get yelled at and sent home for th evening all because you stubbed your toe. What is so bad about expressing your pain why can't these words be said?

1. Bible words
(ex. hell, oh my God, etc.)
These cannot be said because they are sacred or are damnable. You can't say God-damn because god doesn't damn, the devil does. And you can't say devil damn because it sounds terrible and you shouldn't be damning people to hell because then you yourself will go. Phrases containing God are often referred back to the third commandment. "Thou shalt not take thy Lord's name in vain." From the way I understand it, it actually means don't say that "you swear to God." But try telling the hard-headed extremist Christians.

2. Excrement words (what else am I supposed to label it?)
(ex. shit, crap, pissed off, etc)
Obviously, words describing things that take place behind closed doors cannot be repeated in the general public. Of course, everyone DOES them, but they're stil obscene!

3. Sexual words
(ex. screw you, the "F" word)
Same thing as number 2. It goes on in the privacy of your own home and does not belong in polite society. And should never be spoken about on television either because it's corrupting our children who are too young to understand what the heck it's talking about.

4. Jesus
(ex. Jesus Christ, sweet Jesus, etc.)
See bible words.

IT DOESN'T MATTER. I'd estimate that more than 99% of the time when people are yelled at for saying the "F" word in public, they are not referring to anything remotely related to sex. People rarely go around saying "I wanna "F" that girl" when an adult is standing next to them.

And it's the same thing with all the other words. They don't usually refer to what they mean. DENOTATIONS AND CONNOTATIONS. People are being yelled at for the REAL definition of words, not the slang they're using it as. Any Wonderwarts reading this will recognize the following phrase (I'm sorry): "Significance is not dependant upon intention." Applying that to the situation would imply that it doesn't matter HOW you use the word just WHAT the word is. I say that's a load of bull. (Notice how it's okay to use "bull" as long as you don't put "shit" on the end)

Okay, so you get yelled at by teachers and parents for calling someone an F-ing bastard, that's a little different. The reason the teachers should be lecturing you is not for the "dirty words" you chose to use, but the anti-social behavior you're displaying.

And the moral is: Society is fucked up. (not completely just many bits and pieces of it).

Wow, that was a very cynical conclusion. I'm really surprised I wrote that. Oh well!

Irrelevant personal events:
Could have gotten a hundred on a math test but didn't
Scored a goal in soccer (amazing for me)
Read a good book (Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman)

Quotable Quotes:
"You've a good heart. Sometimes that's enough to see you safe wherever you go. But mostly it's not." -Old Woman, Neverwhere, Neil Gaiman
"'Rubbish!' screamed a fat elderly woman, in Richard's ear, as he passed her malodorous stall. 'Junk!' she continued. 'Garbage! Trash! Offal! Debris! Come and get it! Nothing whole or undamaged! Crap, trip, useless pieces of shit. You know you want it.'" - Neverwhere, Neil Gaiman

ramblings, society
