I think one of the things I missed out on learning was understanding why people react to things the way they often do (i.e. inappropriately). Today in philosophy class, the professor was talking about freedom and how it does not guarantee the right to assistance, and he said something to the effect of “Of course you are free to swim in a lake, but what if you’re quadriplegic? Then it’s sort of like a bad joke.” As if on cue, most people in the class started to laugh while the rest of us sat there with a baffled look on our face.

Personally, I think the class reacted to the word joke. I need to start reading more Burroughs and Gysin.
