Character Information
Name: Courtney Crumrin
Fandom: Courtney Crumrin (comic book series)
Background:
Wiki page Growing up in the big city, Courtney never thought she was anything special. Her parents paid very little mind to her, being more interested in emulating the rich (and overspending on credit cards) than in raising a child. When their fortunes took a turn for the worst and were offered a place to stay at old Uncle Aloysius' house in wealthy Hillsborough, they jumped at at the chance, packing their things and taking their child along for the ride. Moving into her grand-uncle's old spooky house and transferring to a school of spoilt rich kids, Courtney felt that her life couldn't get any worse.
Until she found the perplexing arrays of books that Uncle Aloysius owned, and discovered that he was a warlock.
Since then, Courtney's life has changed irrevocably. As she learns the roots of her ancestry, stretching back to an entire family tree of spell-casters and sorceresses, her life is now anything but ordinary. In almost a year after moving in, she's faced off goblins, escaped (twice) from the world of faeries known as the Twilight Kingdom, solved an insidious conspiracy involving a member of the Coven of Mystics, and learnt how to make the right dealings with the wrong kinds of creatures. She's also been forced to learn very hard lessons about human nature - how fear can rule the lives of others, how easily love is forsaken for unhappiness, and how far adults can sink to untold depths of selfishness and stupidity. As she attempts to reconcile mundane life with her love for the mystic arts, Courtney struggles to find her place in the world.
Are you taking this character from a another RP? Taking her from
thedollsyhouse, in which she was trapped in a mansion for what felt like months. Each day lasted a week, while night-time lasted for about two. Courtney spent about five 'nights' there, in which she had to survive a number of encounters with ghosts, mutant creatures, burning men, and hostile shadows. The experience was nightmarish, and Courtney came very close to losing her sanity... until she woke up from it, in her own room, very confused and traumatized.
Since then, her life has continued on as normal... or as normal as things can get, if you're a witch-in-training. She was able to purge the experience from her thoughts for the most part, while she went on holiday with her grand-uncle through Europe, staying with old friends and seeing the country. As well as taking pictures of the pristine wilderness, Courtney managed to get herself in all kinds of trouble, as usual. She interfered in a conflict between huntsmen and lycanthropic gypsies, gotten into conflict with her grand-uncle for her willful nature, and even had her first taste of romance - which sadly did not go well, as the boy in question was a vampire who wanted to keep her as his undead lover, and her grand-uncle came very close to dying in order to save her.
Since then, Courtney and her uncle have been recovering from the ordeal in a hospital in Switzerland, after which they plan to return home. It is from there that Courtney is plunged into a new adventure, snatched away from her world.
Personality: Courtney has always been the strange one - the girl that other kids would always shun in the playground. She's learned not to mind it too much, taking some bitter pleasure in the way that she can unnerve and intimidate other kids with just a glance. She's smart for her age, often more so than the adults around her, with a boldness to match her cunning.
Although she has a natural curiosity for the world around her - especially when it comes to her magical background - she takes an especially dim view when it comes to 'normal' people, believing the majority of mankind are stupid, selfish and wrathful. She observes the world with the eyes of an outcast, one that truly believes that few could possibly understand her - or would care to. Time can only tell whether these pessimistic beliefs stay with her into adulthood.
Despite this negative disposition, she's often a meddler in events that surround her. Beneath her cynicism lies an all-too-sensitive heart, and when she feels that an injustice is taking place, she feels compelled - by any means necessary - to ensure that foul deeds do not go unpunished. Despite her young age, Courtney has proven herself to be both courageous and resourceful when achieving her goals. She has a strong spirit, and often speaks her mind, favoring brutal honesty in lieu of tact. Despite her desire to do good however, the young Crumrin has a dark side reflected in the magic she wields. When trying to get the upper hand, she often resorts to devious, underhanded methods such as enlisting the aid of the 'Night Things', the mischievous faeries of the dark, to do her dirty work.
Despite dealing with goblins, hobgoblins, changelings, faerie folk, doppelgangers and monsters under the bed, Courtney is still a young girl, and prey to any of the insecurities of growing up. There's always the nagging feeling that she doesn't belong, that she won't be accepted anywhere she goes, remaining an outcast from society forever (although she sometimes wonders if maybe that's not a terrible thing). She doesn't know where she stands when it comes to boys, especially after her disastrous fling with a vampire, and she finds the whole idea of growing up to be rather strange and frightening.
Appearance Changes (if applicable): Although Courtney's counterpart dresses similarly, with one-piece dresses, plain shirts, long socks and sneakers, her hair is much tidier, her wardrobe is filled with much sunnier colors (barely a drop of black in anything!) and her bat barrette is no longer in her hair, replaced with one in the shape of a butterfly. No other changes are apparent.
Powers/Abilities: Witchcraft.
Courtney is smart. And with the smartness comes a devious side - in the past, she's negotiated with malevolent creatures so that they do her bidding, and has talked her way out of being enslaved in the Twilight Kingdom - home of the faeries - at least once. Because of her age and size, many adults turn a blind eye to her, feeling that she's harmless, which only serves to help her move in the background unseen.
As well as this, she's picked up a good amount of reading material from her Uncle Aloysius' collection of magic books, and is well on her way to becoming a powerful witch. Already she can control fire to an impressive degree, being able to ignite clothes and skin with just a thought, and can concentrate her power in multiple locations simultaneously. In addition to this, she has been shown to possess a wide array of abilities, such as phasing through walls, withering plants with a single breath, changing into animals, and controlling the weather. She has also been known to provoke fear in others with an intense glare, referred to at least once as "the evil eye".
Courtney's magic has its limitations, however. Religious magic can defend against it with talismans like crosses and holy wards, and more complex spells, such as resurrecting the dead and mind control, require spell components and specific incantations in order to work.
Family Situation: Courtney will be living with two parents, Emily and Peter Wadsworth, with a younger brother named Clinton. Peter is a science teacher at the school Courtney goes to, and although forever concerned about the outward appearance of his family is not an unkind man, though perhaps a little dense when it comes to matters outside of his profession. Emily works in a secretarial position for a company in Haven, and in her home-life is a rather over-weight, overly-religious woman whose personal unhappiness leads her to entangle herself in her children's lives. Clint is a ten year old boy with his own set of problems. Although outwardly he appears a well-behaved, well-to-do young man, at school he often groups with unsavory classmates and bullies the other kids in the playground, taking out his anger and neglect on other children and ensuring that they don't tattle on him to the supervisors.
All family members think of Courtney as a well-behaved, prim and proper young girl, with excellent marks in class - the overachiever in the family. Believing that academic success would equal parental love, the Wadsworth daughter did her best to study hard and excel in class. While her father looks upon her with somewhat oblivious pleasure, and her mother with restrained, cold satisfaction, her brother Clint truly resents her, and will often try to pull pranks to scare or torture her outside of her parents' supervision.
Job: Courtney is a junior student at the local middle school.
First Person Sample: Okay, I am really not getting the joke this time.
These aren't my clothes, and this isn't Hillsborough, and those definitely aren't my parents, (they're way too creepy,) so I'm assuming that I've just replaced someone. Question is, who? And where are they now? Are they living in my life, while I'm stuck here on some... stupid, magical quest in the middle of who knows where?
I really hope whoever I replaced isn't in my life right now. Uncle Aloysius might mistake her for a changeling and melt her face off if she's an idiot.
...Anyway. I'm guessing from this phone that I'm not the only one out there. Right? From this little forum thing, looks like there's a bunch of other people brought in from other places... which is just great. Misery loves company, I guess.
I guess I'll make the introduction. My name's Courtney Crumrin, witch-in-training, and I don't know who you are but I probably don't like you. Any of you bozos wanna make yourself known right now?
Third Person Sample: It was good to finally get some air after staying in that stuffy clinic for so long.
Not that Courtney was entirely free of it, however. Her uncle still needed rest, and the doctors insisted on watching her closely in case any other afflictions came up. She supposed that they had a point - she certainly felt fine, but after an hour of exploring the nearby wilderness she was already dead tired. Lying back on a bench outside of the hospital, she used the solitude to reflect on her recent adventures with her Uncle Aloysius throughout Europe. More than that, she reflected on how the relationship with her uncle had changed since they had traveled together - had it endured, despite everything? Already, she'd seen him at his worst: The way he'd abandon her for private conversations with others; his habit of enforcing the notion of "Do as I say, not as I do"; and his emotional empathy, that rarely extended beyond what he felt for her, which was--what exactly? Protectiveness? Concern? ...Love?
Is this what growing up feels like? she wondered despondently, watching the clouds drift over her head. Finding out that adults can be just as stupid and vulnerable as you? That they make mistakes? That they can die? Courtney had only recently found out about her uncle's heart condition - that unless he could perform a miracle, he'd be dead within a year. His only salvation came in the form of a little bottle of elixir he'd received as a gift - the contents of which he'd mostly used up on Courtney, to cure her of vampirism. Thinking of that inevitably led her to Wolfgang, the vampire who'd come closer than anyone to stealing away her heart, and her hope for a better life. She'd been so close to giving it all up, then and there... would it happen again, she wondered? She'd been spared an eternity of un-death, but would she ever find a cure for loneliness?
She could hear birds chirping in the distance. Out there, animals scurried and flew, away from human eyes. Whole lives carrying on without sadness, or longing. Thinking on where she was and who she was with - after all, for all his faults, her uncle was the closest friend she could name, if nothing else - Courtney made up her mind that even if life wasn't so great for her now, that maybe, just maybe, it could get better. Maybe there existed people that knew how to be happy, despite the odds. Maybe, she too could find something like that for herself.
This was her last conscious thought, as she drifted away to sleep on a mid-afternoon outside a clinic in Switzerland. Her last glimpse of sunshine in a location that was if not familiar, then at least comforting in its own way. When she woke up, things would be much less comfortable for her...
