Of course, when anyone wishes for a day to last forever, if they are that happy, bad things tended to happen fairly shortly afterwards.

They played follow-my-leader on the way back home, with Sin being a scamp by clambering up high onto garden walls when she knew Alan got a little dizzy up high, and Alan returning the favour when he was It by stepping on each and every crack he could find. Sin was deeply superstitious and thought her mother would be hurt by stepping on cracks. Alan assured her the superstitions were wrong.

When they got home, he found out he was wrong. Superstitions were potent, powerful things. His mother had died, and Sin saw hers get eaten by a demon, and Sin blamed him and that was the point that Alan knew what he had to do. He had to read, and read, and read, until he was so clever he couldn't hurt anyone again.

The next time he saw Sin, it was eight years later, and she didn't smell like clay any more. She was all grown up and prettier than he remembered, and so very clever too, except her smarts were from life and accepting its twists and turns with cynicism and sharp survival skills. She was clever enough to forgive him for the childhood game, clever enough to see how much they were still made for each other, but life liked throwing curveballs at Alan and Sin, because Sin might have been able to forgive, but she couldn't see past her mother's death, reflected in his gammy leg. He lied and told himself he was okay with it.

It was the first lie of many.
