So I decided to use this Saturday afternoon to start brushing up on the Japanese that I forgot over the 2 years since my last class. Oy Vey.
There is so much I forgot you have to know in order to be able to speak/read/write another language. I saved all my books from college, which is a good start. There are also a couple books I bought for my own upkeep too, my current favorite is "13 Secrets for Speaking Fluent Japanese". This book is great because it actually doesn't teach you Japanese. It assumes you know enough to get by and teaches you mind tricks so you don't stumble up when you're trying to get words out. It's very helpful and spouts tidbits of wisdom such as,
"Nothing stops a conversation so fast as a four inch lexicon."
and
"You must change from a fearful linguistic hoarder into a fearless linguistic ad-libber."
I couldn't have said it better myself, helpful language book.
I also spent about half and hour remembering how to type in Japanese. It's pretty easy and super wonderful tastic because you don't have to memorize how to actually write complicated characters. You type them in phonetically and the computer just KNOWS what you're looking for and it pops up on the screen.
Thank you Apple, and your integrated Japanese software.
It's times like this I'm grateful I don't have to learn English.
