tigerweave helped me do a brainstorm on Melbourne vs Darwin fashion. At least where wimmins are concerned, we I don't notice men's fashion much, although the generalities are similar.
Melbourne:
* warm look of clothes * cooooool * expensive * textures * sophisticated * self-conscious * muted palette * cutting edge * clean lines * raw edges * hand-made * quirky-cute * minimalist * urban * japanese * street art * urban-natural * self-referential * sciencey * cold feel * screen print * tension of high tech meets low tech * cynical * black/grey * not pretty-pretty * unusual * jaded sophistication * accessorising * faux retro/ nostalgia * modern * boutique * ironic * deconstructed * designed to create reaction from audience
Darwin:
* practical * SE Asian (tropical) * bright colours * non-fadeable * straightforward * naiive * dresses * less showpieces * not posey * one layer! (even if it looks layered) * pretty * washable * sandals * natural * natural fibres * sleeveless * not so adventurous * un-self-conscious * transience * island princess * simple skirts * long feminine dresses * not projecting an image * designed in Darwin, made in Indonesia * cheaper and own more of them (practical to wash) * disposable * shows skin * colours * exuberance * unsophisticated * bright patterns * florals * simple
Obviously there's a lot of types of fashion in Melbourne (and Darwin), but that is the zeitgeist of the local fashion industry. And the two cities really reflect their outlook, climate, population, income, history, past-times, and so forth, in their fashion.
