scary email :-(

I had been planning to take some time this weekend to return to overdue emails. Life has been nonstop stress for the last few months and I never felt I could sit down and take the time to write more than a few insignificant lines. When I opened my email this morning, I received this from one of those friends I'd been planning to catch back up with:

Hello! In an effort to write a nice introduction, all I can think to say is that... life is what happens when we're planning our future. Saving myself the awkward task of finding the right words, and you from having to read them, I am just gonna cut to the point.

I am already in the process of relocating, changing just about everything in my life... taking my world to a very small, simple way of being. Most important in this process is that I am purposely creating a void of people. I've realized that I have nothing left of myself to offer anyone -- wouldn't want to if I did -- and, frankly, that there is nothing I want nor expect from other people. Guess you could say that I am disconnecting with the 'real world' now... although I am not trying to hide, am deliberately not wanting to be found. It's time to live on my own terms and without interruption of people.

If already not clear enough... I've found and begun to set-up a new home and job; canceled my cell phone, credit cards, and this email address (no, I won't see any replies); and quit my jobs in Maryland. Everyone, with few exceptions, is receiving this email... up to you to decide whether you should take it personally and, if so, why.

Please understand that I am incredibly happy, excited, and already better-off because of this. Good-bye, and sincere best wishes in the future for you!

I am completely in shock and very hurt that this friend would decide to cut off all contact with me. Of course I sent him a reply and the email was returned. This friend has been disappointed in the past by many people. I guess he doesn't realize that in doing what he's done, he is acting just like those people. It's hard to believe that maybe only because I haven't been able to email him as often as I'd like, that he doesn't think that I'm a good enough friend. I really prefer talking to people on the phone but it's always difficult for us to find a time when neither of us is at work. He's obviously extremely depressed and it worries me. Unless he decides he wants to be found, I'll spend the rest of my life wondering whether he's o.k.
