Ali, I'm stealing this from you because you explained it a whole lot better than I ever could
"Sam's going to attempt to read the Bible cover to cover and highlight inconsistencies, or rather, things that the Bible says Christians should do, but don't. For example, it is a sin to shave your beard. A lot of Christians are going to hell then. It's stuff like that that really makes me believe that this stuff was written by some Joe Shmoe Jesus. OOOH!!! What I could do is compare it to something GOVERNMENTAL!!! That will be fun!!
Okay, the 10 Commandments are like the Constitution of the United States. The 10 Commandments were made to stand the test of time and apply to any period in human history. The 27 Amendments were made to deal with issues in the long term, like women's sufferage and Civil Rights. Amendments to the federal Constitutions are harder to add and harder to take away. The 10 Commandments and the 27 Amendments are supposed to be permanent. Now, the Bible is like State Constitutions. The Bible has things written in it that pertain to the time period in which it was written. Amendments to State Constitutions deal with politics of the moment and these amendments are easy to add and easy to take away. When they're no longer useful, they can be removed; when a pressing issue comes up, it can be added easily. The Bible has just never been amended to deal with present times. I mean, not shaving your beard? I highly doubt God gives a shit about that. In closing, the federal Consitution is the law of the land and cannot be trumped by State law. The 10 Commandments are the laws of the religion and surpass any of those silly "laws" that are written in the Bible, like you can beat your wife, have many wives to beat, or keep slaves.
I hope you all understood that. My main point being that I think it's more important to keep the 10 Commandments than to listen to the Bible, because that's full of 2000 year old crap that doesn't apply to 2007. The Bible needs to be amended. Anyway, Sam is undertaking this project to prove that Christian's pick and choose what they want to believe based on convenience. Well, we already know that's true, which is why there are 500 different denominations of Christianity. Religion is just bizarre and I talk about it entirely too much."
So thats why I bought a Bible. I have no intention of being 'Saved' or enlightened because I know I already am.
