for 31-days.

title: Overrated
fandom: Naruto
pairing: Tayuya/Kin
warnings: AU. cursing.

It’s rare that Kin and Tayuya will sit down and have a nice quiet moment. Hell, quiet moments for this pair are rare and far apart, and that’s how they like it best. Still, every so often, there will come a morning where one of them doesn’t need to head off to one place or another and the other sleeps in. Kin might lean forward and blow against the back of Tayuya’s neck, something that never fails to bother her. She’ll let out a sharp curse and jump up immediately, trying to get as far away from that black-haired menace as she can.

She’ll go make coffee.

They’re different, these two. Yes, they are alike in those surface ways that everyone is so quick to point out. Oh, look, you’re both so tough. You’re both so angry, and you curse and you’re smart. You’re both strong, stronger than most.

Tayuya and Kin will both snarl at these comments.

Kin, she has an inferiority complex. She doesn’t believe that she’s smart or tough or strong, and she highly doubts she ever will be. It’s taken her years to come to terms with who she is, and be happy with the fact that she won’t ever really amount to much. She’s taking some classes at the community college, some accounting. Numbers, they’re easy. Sharp. She’s not a dreamer, not a flimsy woman. She’d steady, and while she doesn’t know quite where she’s going, she knows she’s going to do it as steadily as she does everything else.

Tayuya, she has a superiority complex. She knows that everyone’s wrong while she has a point. She knows that she’s strong, she knows that she’s clever. She doesn’t need one of these little rats telling her so. Rats, that’s how she saw most people. She was in a band, and she played music, as opposed to what most people listened to. Trash. She knew better. They would play downtown in the same clubs. Once, a tall man in a dark suit had approached them, telling them that he was interested. Very interested. Would they like to sit down have a few drinks with him? On him, of course. She was the one really against it. She refused. What they had, this was freedom. Who knew what kind of fetters a recording company would place on them? On her.

Iron burns.

The scalding black coffee soothes. Kin sips it, feeling the hot liquid burning her tongue. She won’t be able to taste much today. Tayuya swallows it fast, feeling the burn in her throat. She lets out a sharp curse, enjoying it.

“Oh, fuck.”

If they were to kiss each other, they wouldn’t taste anything. But they don’t kiss outside of sex. No smooches, no pecks. They’re not that kind of couple. Public signs of affection seemed the opposite of crash, and that’s what they were comfortable with.

“Turn on the fucken radio, man,” Tayuya growls, picking up a book from the small shelf and flipping through it slowly, trying to find a part to start from. “It’s way too quiet. I can hear myself think.”

Kin doesn’t think before pushing her chair back and moving towards the black little box of music that they keep in the corner by the window and the single armchair. She presses the ON button, and then glances through the CDs left sprawled on the little bit of space left on the table. Ah. Tegan and Sara. She’s in the mood for something soft, something-

The voices spring from the speakers like demons, invading. Tayuya lets out a shout.

“Turn that shit off!” She spins around in her chair to face Kin. “Banshees. Put Mastadon on.”

Kin frowns. She likes this song. “Fuck you.” She turns and walkes past the table. She needs to get dressed and to class.

She doesn’t feel it at first. It prickles and then-

“OH SHIT” she cries, her head snapping to look down at her leg, dripping with a dark liquid, skin red. Tayuya’s cup overturned. “YOU BITCH.”

Tayuya doesn’t look up from her book. She’s begun near the end, where she knows there was a sex scene. “Put Mastadon on.”

“Fuck you,” Kin hisses and stumbles into the bathroom.

This is what keeps them together. Not their similarities, not their differences. The fact that Tayuya can overturn a hot cup of coffee onto Kin’s leg, and she’ll come back for more, every time.

Nice, quiet relationships are overrated.
