401 - Can't Have It Both Ways

One can't
have it

both ways
and both

ways is
the only

way I
want it.

-A.R. Ammons

"You can't have it both ways." Boy, did I hear that phrase a lot from Uncle J.P. when I was growing up. Granted, most of the time it was directed at Skeeter but I'll admit that I had my fair share of hearing it. Unc usually pulled it out when one of us was whining about something that we either didn't want to do, or that we wanted to do but Unc wouldn't let us do it.

The board of directors at Uncle J.P.'s company have been after me since his death to take his place on the board, even though I've told them time and again that I'm not interested and never will be interested. I don't have the head for business that Unc did; the best I am at managing is managing backstage at the theater for every show. But they seem to think that just because I'm a Grosse I'm just like him.

If I had my way, I would be able to do both - work at the theater and with Unc's company. I'd divide my time between the two equally and still have time left over for myself. But, like Uncle J.P. so often said, I can't have it both ways. I have to choose between doing what's expected of me and doing what I love.

Doing what I love is going to win out every time.
