Teaching Adam

Never let it be said that an Antichrist knows everything. Pepper was aware that Adam was supposed to, but in that case why couldn’t he see? The first thing she had done was play a bit closer to him, in hopes that they would get closer, but that one failed. Adam had just smiled and continued on with being the head pirate, while she would always be stuck as his first mate.

The next time she tried anything had been a year after that, when she had brought for his 13th birthday a brand new bike to match her own one (thankfully this time round her parents had gotten it right, and it was not a girly bike). It had cost a bit of money, but he had been very thankful, but never in the way that she wanted. After she had worked hard jobs around the house to earn the money for it too. Her mum had thought it about time she learned to be responsible.

Once she and Adam had sat under an apple tree talking about school and things they would like to be when they were officially adults. Pepper had shown an interest in engineering, while Adam had decided in his still rather childish way that he would fix things for a living. They had both laughed and Pepper had thought about kissing him. That had been the first time she had truly wanted to though and it had frightened her. She had made an excuse and left for home.

For a time since then every time she had been around Adam alone it either excited her to the point she would be as bouncy as any other girl with a crush, or made her so afraid she might make a fool of herself she had to cancel. Over the past year though, she had just wanted to grab him and either throttle him into seeing or just doing what she wanted.

Now she was almost 16 and still had yet to be kissed. For years she had been trying to gain Adam’s attention, show him that she liked him in a way that was more than friendship. The sinking suspicion that even Wensley and Brian knew didn’t help with her growing urgency.

The winter was harsh this year and very, very cold which meant bundling up under blankets in front of a roaring fire. Pepper thought it romantic, Adam thought it practical. Wensleydale wasn’t allowed out, Brian couldn’t be bothered leaving the comfort of his own house, so it was just Pepper who had trudged her way over to Adam’s for the day.

A storm had come during the day and with it came snow. It was now nearing 9pm, and the storm had yet to let up. A smile lit up her face when she realized that meant she would be staying the night at Adam’s house.

After a warm dinner of pumpkin soup, Pepper and Adam had gone into the living room, bundled up in a blanket each and decided to watch movies. She let Adam choose and to her displeasure, he put on a drama.*

Halfway through the movie she let her head fall onto his shoulder, with all intents on falling asleep there. He moved though, and stopped as when his arm was draped around her. With a sigh of happiness at getting even this close, Pepper curled up more comfortably where she was and decided staying awake was better off in the long run. She didn’t want to miss Adam’s touch.

By the time the movie was over, she had gotten used to it and had even begun to enjoy it. At the end though she was a little uncomfortable with the plot and squirmed quite a bit. The protagonist, a boy, had just found out that the girl of his dreams was also his best friend.

Adam was watching with a smile on his face, and Pepper wondered what he was thinking of. Was it her? Was it someone else? Was it the actual story line itself? Anger flared in her at how stupid Adam could sometimes be.

Fed up with always being seen as nothing but the best friend, Pepper lifted her head off of Adam’s shoulder, titled his head to face her and kissed him with as much passion as she could manage for a first kiss. It was sloppy and she wasn’t really sure if she was doing it right, but her heart seemed to swell to fill her chest and it left her breathless.

To her enjoyment, Adam seemed equally as taken by the move as she was. Now his smile had gone from sweet to goofy in a matter of seconds and the look somehow suited him.

“So, what were you smiling for at the end of the movie?” she asked, laying her head back down on his shoulder and snuggling closer. He put his arm back around her in a way that made her want to melt.

“Hmm, well it was actually pretty silly to even think of, but I wondered if a certain angel and demon would like to watch the movie.”

Pepper closed her eyes and shook her head. Trust Adam to think something so odd.

At least now Adam knew.

* The movie in question is Garden Estate. A movie that I was told was a drama and it is, but was so weird in my mind, that I actually enjoyed it.
