For some reason, my cats are fascinated by the act of using the toilet. They like to put their paws up on the seat while you're sitting on it and see if they can see what's going on inside the bowl. If you put your pants down around your ankles, they'll climb in and sit in your underwear (to be clear: I don't find this gratifying). And if you're a guy, they'll stand between your legs and peer into the bowl, putting themselves in grave danger of being dripped on. Needless to say, we keep the lid down whenever possible to keep the things from drinking out of the toilet, or worse. Once, when the lid had been left open, Chris caught Mugsy in mid-dive, a split second before he hit the water.
Last night they were particularly insistent. As soon as I stood up, the kittens started trying to storm the bowl. Bugsy hopped up on the seat and before I had time to flush, he had belly-flopped into a bowl full of pee.
I have a couple of theories about why they're doing this. They've been very curious about water this week. They climb in the bathroom sink when it's dry, and they climb into the shower and play in the tub when the door is open. We've been using a spray bottle when they're naughty, and we've been giving them flea baths because they're too young for the topical gel. So maybe they figure they get wet so often that they're just going to face their fear and get over it.
They also like toilet paper a lot. They unraveled a full roll before we started putting it out of their reach, but yesterday I think it fell on the floor and when I got home the carpet was covered in toilet-roll snow. They do that with tissues too. So maybe Bugsy was trying to rescue the toilet paper toy that I dropped in the toilet.
We gave him a bath. Immediately. Kittens look hilarious when they're wet -- they're pretty much all fur so they turn into little stick figures, and they make pathetic howling noises when we run water to rinse them off. But then we dry them with a big fluffy towel, which they don't mind so much.
After Bugsy stopped making a fuss about bathing they dispersed and Mugsy went straight for this little mouse toy they like to play with. The mice are a little smaller than the kittens' heads, and they like to carry them around in their mouths. Cute! Mugsy is completely nuts -- his eyes are crazy, his fur is crazy, he eats the least but he has the most energy, and he's also the smartest kitty. With the mouse in his mouth he made a beeline for the water dish, and without hesitation, he dropped the mouse in the water. I think he was trying to give it a bath!
