the day of saint valentine came and went without notice, as it usually does for those of us who do not have a significant other to share the hallmark, candy company, card company, psuedo-holiday with. however, it's not a "man's holiday," no, not at all. instead, it's a "give the woman who you love (or are a close friend with) something so that she'll say 'awww, you're so sweet.'" kind of day. yesterday being that kind of day, i did that...twice.

the first: about a week ago, i promised colette that i would buy her a rose for valentine's day because she wasn't going to be getting any gifts from anyone else. i woke up from a nap at about six pm and was worried because i hadn't talked to her all week and i didn't know whether or not she was working and whether or not i would get the chance to see her. so at about nine-thirty, i left elizabeth's house and went to buy a rose. i took the rose to colette's work and caught her just as she was getting off work. she saw me and her face lit up, and she ran to me and gave me a big hug. apparently, i made her day even more great because she had had a bad day the whole day.

the second: i arrived home at about midnight and proceeded to get online, as i always do. i asked a friend of mine how her valentine's day was, she said it was horrible because no one bought her flowers. no one including her current romantic interest. so, i instantly threw up an away message, drove to get a rose, and drove to her house. before i got to her house, though, i called a friend and had him send her an instant message telling her to go outside (where i would be waiting). i waited for ten minutes, then i left the rose on her doorstep and drove away. she didn't get the message until i had left, roughly, but she still got the rose and did the "awww, how sweet." thing.

i know, i know. these really aren't typical "proto things," but i figure that for one day out of the year i have to show that i have some variation of a heart. of course, though, it can't be on christmas because that's more of a fraudulent holiday than valentine's day. thank god for commercialism.

chalking up a point for experience, i used my triple a card for the first time today. as i previously (and subliminally) implied, i was at elizabeth's house tonight. michael elm was there as well, and he locked his keys in his car. no big deal, just go get the spare pair of keys or have them brought out. too bad mr. elm lived two hours away and his parents didn't know he was in mesa. so we called triple a, after visiting the fire department and finding out that it was now city policy that they couldn't unlock the cars unless there was a trapped baby inside. triple a came out, unlocked elm's car for him, and then he drove happily away to his house. him and i agreed that every weekend we should randomly lock someone's car and call triple a just to get acquainted with them on a first-name basis.

it's strange that i just finished writing a narrative on my semisweet night. normally i don't do that and write a piece on some aspect of my cynical perspective on a given subject. not only that, but valentine's day would seem to be the perfect holiday to assassinate the ideas and philosophies of a psuedo-holiday. however, even as bitter as i am, i really can not find anything to pick apart, analyze, disembowel, or tear to pieces about saint valentine's day. true: it's a bullshit holiday that was created for card companies and candy companies to make them a grand first-quarter profit...but everyone knows that.

all i know is that roses were displayed myriadically and that made them easily accessible for one to stop and smell the roses. maybe that's the true meaning behind it all. a day specifically set aside so one can appreciate the finer things in life, so one can say 'i love you' and mean it, so one can smile and be simply lighthearted for a day, or so one could make someone's day better than every other day of the year. if that's the case, i think there should be another valentine's day in the middle of the summer...
