He's an end-of-level boss from the R-Type shoot-'em-up series of games. He was never very good at being a boss - he got his ass kicked in every one, which resulted in his appearance changing every time. This is his form in the first game; in the second, he's been given robotic armour, but he gets his body back for the third game. In the fourth, he's practically a zombie, with hideous skin and mutations; by the time of the fith game, he's been killed and bought back so many times that he's just a rotting monster in a life-support vat, and he literally falls apart as you fight him for the final time; it's somewhat heartwrenching to watch this immensly powerful monster (Who, in my case, you have literally grown up alongside), who has just been pushed too far, too hard, for too long, crumble, for the final time, at your hands, and the knowledge that you will never be able to fight him again; this was it, for all time. The absolute worst bit is when his head is knocked off, near the start of the fight; that is what tells you that you can never, ever undo what is happening.
