When traveling around holiday weekends, it usually makes the airfare wickedly cheaper to stay an extra day or so. Now that my mom has moved out of Wisconsin, it was the first time I felt no guilt spending that extra day back in downtown Chicago instead of with family ( Read more... )

There's a reason for what you feel. I was watching a documentary recently that explored why we have such vivid memories from our teens and 20s. Apparently it's chemical, and also related to how our brains are changing during this period. This is also the time when we fully develop our understanding of mortality and the passage of time. What's most interesting to me is that when we experience something traumatic during this period of our life, like the death of a loved one, a significant illness or injury, or a violent crime, it has a profound impact on our mental health, and, by extension, the outcome of our lives.
