how does this work

How does the pupil of the eye expand without stretching or crunching the Iris? It would have to overlap the iris, but as we all know, thats not the case. My iris has a tawny explosion, erupting inside an emerald atmosphere of sexy.. and when my pupil expands, its not like that picture gets crunched.. instead, the explosion is completely covered up ( Read more... )

Blake,

You're right that the iris is a muscle, in that it does cause the expansion/contraction of the pupil. the reason that the image that your eye sees is not affected is because of the same processes by which a camera functions. Your pupil is exactly like the aperture of a camera, in that it governs how much light is allowed into your eye. The pupil is a hole in your eye, protected by that clear "bubble" (i don't recall the medical term for it). If you've ever watched any "B" sci-fi movies or shows, you've seen those circular doors that are made of several triangular pieces that open or close based on the way in which the pieces slide. your pupil does the same thing, and functions on the same principle (principal?). in brighter light, the exposure on the nerves in the back of the eye is greater, and in order to properly see the image, the pupil contracts so as to allow less light in, and thus seeing the image. if you have your aperture open too wide on a camera, you get an over-exposure on the film, resulting in a poor shot (the pictures that are all-white looking, with few details). But you said you understand the reasons why it does this, so i'll forgo the rest of this explaination.

Pucker up baby, or, if you still don't understand the explaination, i'll show you in person this weekend. Peace.
