Bookstore visit

Back in November our foster daughter, carpe_noctum_93, introduced me to Half Price Books. This evening we made a family visit to the Roseville store.

On the top of the science fiction paperback section there were a bunch of old editions carefully packaged in plastic as collectibles. I have owned some of the same editions:

I read The Sword of Aldones, in that Ace double edition, back in the mid 1960's, before I was in High School. During high school I read Andre Norton's Witch World series. I still have my copy of that edition of Three Against the Witch World. The price on the cover is 40 cents.

I did not read The Lord of the Rings until the spring of 1969, during my first year at Carleton. It was this edition, the first paperback edition in the U.S.A. authorised by Tolkien. I remember the fuss about the earlier edition by Ace books, published through some loophole in the copyright laws. I suspect any of those that are still around have a much higher price on the collectibles market.

Half Price Books has an impressive selection of books in a wide range of fields, including foreign languages. In the German section of the Roseville store I have seen both this and this. I have never found either auf Deutsch at Barnes and Noble.

books, college, high school, science fiction, germany
