Somewhere on one of our old
filk tapes is a song that begins "I'm a computer necromancer. I can raise your system from the dead."
So am I.
I have done it quite a few times, most recently tonight. The corpse was a Compaq Presario laptop that we bought for our older son J a few years ago. In fact this was the third time I had revived it. The previous two times he had managed to strangle it with malware and I had reinstalled Windows, which was not fun. I think I wrote about one or both of those experiences here. The third time he bricked the hard drive. I got him a desktop system and put the laptop aside.
I bought a new hard drive for it today, and installed it this evening. Then I installed
Xubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) on it. As I have consistently found lately, installing Linux from scratch was easier than Windows. Since I had already replaced J's system,
mia_mcdavid will get the Presario. My little Eee PC (I am using it now) will continue to be my portable system.
