For those who don't know, serendipity is that wonderful event when something works out way better than planned, particularly when it comes out of left field. This has hit our Wednesday night gaming group in the best possible way.
My Champions game set in Vibora Bay was less than stellar. I felt like I was one of those vaudevillians on the old Ed Sullivan Show, spinning a dozen plates on whippy little sticks and running madly from cane to cane to keep everything going. While it is a fine setting, I never really got that "aha" feeling about bringing it to life for the players, so maybe I was pushing it a little too hard. Also, Bryan and I have concluded that this group, being as good as it is, has a tendency to make systems and settings unplayable in the future because later attempts are always in the shadow of the great game. It happened with Serenity. It happened with Iron Heroes. It happened with Champions. Doc, Kessa and Deanna broke it. I may be able to run another Champions game somewhere, someday, but not for this group.
So we were scratching around for something else to play, and I got a sudden inspiration: Lene has been dying to try the Supernatural RPG from Margaret Weis. It's based on the television series of the same name and uses MWP's Cortex System. She, Wren, Bryan and Jesse set up hunters last Wednesday, and I took the pdf version of the rules to see what I could do with them. I had already run a vampire adventure using Dark Champions a couple of years ago, so I figured this should be simple enough.
That's where serendipity kicks in. Before I got a chance to finish reading the rules, Bryan did, and he loves them so much that he is taking over as GM. I came up with a concept for a hunter, and tomorrow, we go out to bust some ghosts.
