2 Gene/Babe drabbles

a/n: Just two short short Gene/Babe drabbles.
i.
Gene is tired. They're all tired,, but Gene's the only one Babe ever really focuses on. Gene's speech is slower, every word drawled out as if they were too big for his mouth.
"My grandma was a Traiteur," he says for the fifth time.
I know, Gene. His fingers, numb with old, curl around Gene's shoulder-the fabric is rough, stiffened by the ice, burning against the pads of Babe's fingers. "Was she really?"
"Yeah," Gene answers, his teeth chattering with each breath. "Cured people, she did."
Spina huddles closer to them in his sleep, and Babe tries to fix the blanket so they're covered best as possible.
"Kinda like you," Babe murmurs, wriggling his toes to get some blood flowing.
Gene chuckles, but it comes out more like a wheezing cough. Babe understands. He can feel the icicles in his lungs, too. "I just fix things," Gene says. "She...She could take it all away."
"So she's an angel."
Gene laughs a loud, hoarse cough. "Yeah. She used to put on her wings before she'd leave."
"She ever let you try them on?"
Gene smiles grimly. "Once."
ii.
"Medic! Medic!"
"I'm fine! I'm fine!" Spina snarls through gritted teeth. "Jesus Christ, Babe, shut the fuck up."
But Gene's already thrown himself into their foxhole, trying to rip through Spina's uniform. "I still can't find any goddamn fucking scissors," he curses furiously as he tears open a sulfa packet with his teeth.
"My bag," Spina half-screams as the white powder makes contact with his wound. Babe finds it in a matter of seconds, but Gene's hands are shaking so badly, they slice Babe's palm open.
"Shit!"
"No, save it," Babe says, withdrawing his hand as Gene reaches for another sulfa packet.
"Don't be an idiot."
"Christ, Gene," Spina laughs as he bandages his own arm. "Are you going to fall apart every time I can't hold your hand?"
Gene ignores him as he wraps a cloth over Babe's hand.
"Hey, do I get another piece of chocolate for this?"
Gene looks at him with an intensity that makes Babe blink twice, three times.
"Babe," Gene says quietly. "Watch the goddamn line."
There's another cry for a medic, and Babe's left alone, looking mutinous, with Spina cackling at his side.
