I'm sure you've heard of this group - the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas, whose religion revolves around "God hates fags and caused the war in Iraq because there are so many fags and if you're son/daughter is a soldier who dies in Iraq (regardless of his/her sexual orientation), it is God's punishment for all the fags."  Brilliant! So sensible ( Read more... )

From the first time I heard their statement-- ("God hates fags")-- I wanted to scream to them ( ... )

Maybe "put in them in their place" is not what I meant. I more appreciated it as quality mockery, which is the only recognition I believe these people deserve ( ... )

The reason it would be most effective from someone who does believe it is a sin-- and I'm not talking the people who believe it's THE SIN THAT'S BRINGING THE WHOLE WORLD TO DAMNATION, I'm talking the otherwise good, kind, sensible people who will, when the issue comes up in conversation, say, "I don't believe in gay marriage, marriage is between a man and a woman"-- usually these people are older, but you'll find younger people who aren't insane who think that, too (usually they've been more sheltered and met less actual gay people)-- anyway, the reason it would be most effective coming from them is that the argument would no longer be about whether or not it's okay to be gay, it would be whether or not it's okay to persecute someone for, not just being gay, but whatever their perceived sin might be. It would bring to light the issue of, let's call it Modern Day Stonings. It reminds people of Jesus's teachings that a man ought not to try to get the bit of sawdust out of some other guy's eye while he's got a plank sticking out of his ( ... )

I think I see what you're saying - maybe that an individual's approval/disapproval of another person's lifestyle shouldn't effect how they (or policies) treat that person. Like, Liz might not be a fan of the bitchy PADs at her elementary school, but she doesn't think they shouldn't be allowed to live in the suburbs and drive SUV's if that's what they want. Maybe?

(although, I don't think they should be allowed to drive SUV's because they are gas-guzzling, carbon-emitting monstrosities, but not so much as my arch-enemy, the HUMMER. ;-))

Yes, that's what I was saying. I was about to go add that actually but had to finish my comment to Liz first. Just because you don't agree with a person doesn't give you the right to treat that person cruelly.

So much productive discussion could take place if people would allow people to hold opinions they disagree with!

(LOL to the bit about SUVs by the way. what I can't get is why people who drive them complain about the price of gas. You wouldn't be PAYING 60 bucks a tank if you were driving a Corolla!)

I know you don't hate anyone, but do you really think homosexuality is a sin?

I'm not mad, I am just wondering, from your post.

Ah, I wasn't talking about ME (or my opinions). See my reply to Tracie to see what I was talking about. Also notice my phrase was "MOST effective." That doesn't mean people who DON'T believe homosexuality is wrong shouldn't speak up against the creeps ( ... )

I do understand what you are saying. I can respect that opinion, because I understand where you are coming from ( ... )

And gay people are sort of set up to sin, then, because they CAN'T get married. This is exactly why I take the stance I do on gay marriage! Like I said, homosexuality ITSELF can't actually be the sin, because it doesn't apply to most people. But that's just my opinion, I'm definitely NOT speaking for any particular religion there. (For the record, I'm a bad Catholic to look to for an example of What Catholics Do-- I was brought up in a mixed-denomination family to pay more attention to the meaning than the rituals. I can tell you some things I know about Catholic Doctrine, which most of the time I agree with but occasionally I will argue. For example, the official catholic stance is "No gay marriage," and obviously I'm not on the boat with that one. But Catholics for all their pomp and ritual tend to be more liberal than you might expect, with all the media says about "Christians" (usually the fundamentalists, who incidentally generally distrust Catholics and think they are idol worshipers and not true Christians)-- the official ( ... )
