[Ema's finally feeling better!

Too bad she's too angry at the universe to really appreciate that fact. After being terrorized by Schuldig* and receiving a peice of leather with her handprint on it, Ema is not in a good mood.

Judging from her tone, it's incredibly obvious.]

Investigation people? What's our status?

[Kind of ignoring her bad mood. Or is he just oblivious? In any case, have an Eddie who sounds far too enthusiastic.]

Ms. Skye! Feeling better, are we?

The fever's gone and I don't feel like I'm going to die, so there's that.

[Otherwise, no.]

That's always nice.

In any case, I think Scout and I may be on the verge of something critical.

[There's a long pause, after which Ema's tone loses most of its ire.]

Go on.

First, let me start by telling you that this is huge. An even bigger opportunity, perhaps, than our infiltration of the Smith home was able to provide for us.

How huge?

[With the way you're building this up, Eddie, this had better be the MOST IMPRESSIVE THING EVER.]

Gargantuan.

[And of course, to help with his pitch, he's gonna bring in a riddle. Go figure.]

Riddle me this, Ms. Skye: What does Officer Grady say to Scout and I, if he requires our aid?

....

What kind of question is that?

[All of that ire? It's back now. Good job.]

Why the hell would Grady ask for help from either of you?

No need to get fussy. It's a simple question, with an even simpler answer. Incidentally, the answer is, "Police and Thank You."

[...wah-wah. Ignoring how horrible that pun was...]

The reason he'd ask for our help is because the Mayfield Police Force started taking in recruits not so long ago. Take a wild guess who was hired.

You and Scout? Seriously?!

['Gargantuan' is too large a word.]

When?

Just last week. We received our letters in the mail. Well, us and three others.

This is a better opportunity than we could have dreamed of!

We'll have to meet--you, Scout, and I. While you two are playing cops, I'm sure there's something supplemental that I could be doing.

Scout himself isn't very happy about the whole thing, but I've given him my assurances that in time, we'll be able to find the key to solving Mayfield's mysteries. And with your assistance, we'll find it even faster. I'm sure of it.

We'll have to convene on some night when the two of us aren't on patrol.

[Man, it still feels so strange to call himself a police officer.]

Of course he isn't; after what Kay just revealed over the phone lines, I don't think any sane person would be thrilled to work for Grady. [The fact that Scout's a natural troublemaker only adds to his contempt for the town's law enforcement, probably, but she doesn't comment on that.] But it's one hell of a chance for us. I come from a tradition of law enforcement--I'll give him some tips that might keep him from getting fired. Or worse.

While you two investigate Grady, it might be a good idea for me to turn my attention to the Smiths. That way we can cover more ground.

But that's a discussion for over drinks, I think.

[Kay. So that's the name of the young woman who'd called. He goes strangely quiet for a second.]

I'll admit... the call was certainly disconcerting. When I first came here, I was a schoolteacher. One of my former students, a bright young man by the name of Crowe, ended up being executed by Grady that night. It was... nothing he deserved.

[After a brief pause, he speaks up again.]

But you're absolutely correct. There's no better time to conduct an investigation than now. I, likewise, have had some experience with the law. I can ensure Scout behaves himself properly around our new boss when you aren't around.

And I concur; covering more ground would be essential. Perhaps we could even---Wait. This is it. I've got it. Edward, you genius!

[He chuckles to himself, giddy like a schoolboy. This may sound good to you right now, Ema, but it'll definitely be Bad News Bears later on.]
