I am already undertaking a project of this nature, I'm taking down everyone's accounts and recounting the story to our town historian, of sorts.

Oral accounts are good evidence--great thinking! I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes, I'm just trying to get everything organized so we don't end up doing redundant investigations.
