Pagan (Romain Tardy/2013)

Paganism (from Latin paganus, meaning "country dweller", "rustic") is a blanket term, typically used to refer to religious traditions which are polytheistic or indigenous. It is primarily used in a historical context, referring to Greco-Roman polytheism as well as the polytheistic traditions of Europe and North Africa before Christianization. [Wikipedia]
This installation, shown on the main facade of the Museum of archaeology of Toulouse, south of France, was inspired by a scultpure of a bacchanalian head from the 3rd century (see picture below). This sculpture had been found at the end of the 17th century and exhibited as an example of an antique pagan idol since then.
Using the idea of polymorphism that is a feature of the ancient gods, the head becomes almost invisible when integrated to the structure made of an abstract network of straight lines. The light will reveal several patterns, from abstract constellations to enigmatic symbols that will affect the rest of the building.
This work is a new collaboration with the musician Squeaky lobster.

For this project, ALIAS dance company founder and choreographer Guilherme Botelho gave me a carte blanche to create a special piece for the 20th anniversary of the company.
With more than 20 spectacles from the early 90's to their latest creation Antes in 2014, and more than 600 representations on all continents, ALIAS' work has been an uninterrupted exploration for the hidden and unusual angles, using dance as a middleman between us and the world that surrounds us.
By browsing through the video archives of the company (which contains both amateur and professional footage, shot on analog or digital video camera), I recomposed an imaginary spectacle which never happened physically.
The video installation uses the two angled walls of the main building of the Théâtre forum de Meyrin as a projection support, each video being in the blind spot of the other, so the vision of the whole installation is always distorted. The piece was on display for a week every night, just before the representation of ALIAS' new creation Antes, in the same venue. The music of this installation is composed by Mexican musician Murcof, who also did the music of Antes.
As this piece embodies so many different works - works that are not mine - i couldn't give it a proper title. A distorted vision of the past, as well as no precise title, was probably the best way I found to recall memories from the past.
The original piece is 18 minutes in one block. For the online diffusion, I split it into 5 actions.

Lobster (Romain Tardy/2013)

The Ark is an ephemeral, site-specific audiovisual installation that took place in the ethnobotanical garden of Oaxaca, Mexico, during the first edition of Proyecta Oaxaca, a new festival dedicated to digital art.
Exceptionnaly, the garden was open at night, and the visitors were invited to walk down the narrow paths that led to the cactus grove standing at its very heart.
In a poetic approach, The Ark gives voice to the plants which are turned into abstract characters: an unpredictable choir, and the beating heart of the garden.
Telling their story and revealing their imaginary nature, The Ark is a mise en abîme of the course. Loosely inspired by the myth of the Great flood, this audiovisual installation in three parts unfolds like a movie projected into space, where the spectator’s motion serves as a camera.
Music composed by Squeaky Lobster.

EXISDANCE - Real time tracking & Projection mapping
Hayato AndoPRO
Born from collaboration between Panasonic and the creative studio P.I.C.S., “EXISDANCE” represents a new step in real-time projection mapping. Japanese Director Hayato Ando teamed up with the Japanese Dancer Kikky (Missy Elliot, World order) and French Engineer Paul Lacroix (OMOTE, Face Hacking). He wanted to express the creation of something originating from the movements of the dance.“EXISDANCE” is a stunning performance revealing the future of live stage projection mapping.
