There were days when Remy LeBeau questioned his allegiance when it came to this war. His family that he loved despite everything were all human and they had known what he was all along but they had still loved him. Homo Sapiens weren’t all bad... but then there were the scum like the FoH, the ‘Friends of Humanity’, who made him remember why he was here. They hated mutants because they feared them, but that was no excuse. The protests were becoming more frequent, the group’s member count was growing, and it had all become too much. It was time they got taken down a peg. If they wanted something to fear then they got what they wanted ( ... )

She was trying to move people out of the way. That's what she was mainly there for. Rogue had already successfully diverted fighting so far. Not that a few of the Brotherhood hadn't already seen her.

Did she like saving the Friends of Humanity? Not at all. But this amount of chaos and destruction was like hell. Suddenly about ten feet away from her, a car was lifted from the ground and exploded not far away. She moved to protect her head, before seeing who around them could have done that.

Picking her head up, she saw him. Remy. Why was she not surprised? She had no real way of taking him out, but maybe if she could distract him for long enough, someone else could? He was more physically opposing, and Rogue wasn't entirely sure what she could do against him aside from straight up touching him.

Dashing around a group of people, she made to cut him off.

Gambit watched the explosion with an air of dark glee, his red eyes smoldering in the firelight. He was not a killer, not normally, not intentionally, but these ignorant fils de pute had it coming, not that he had struck to kill. The men were all thrown off their feet from the explosion, and he was sure injuries would result, and if any of them were serious... well, he had enough ghosts in his past to feel guilty for, he wasn’t about to let anyone from the FOH keep him awake at night.

Getting to his feet, cards at the ready, the Cajun approached one of the fallen men. “Dis ain’ your day, homme,” he said, voice low and dangerous. “But maybe I give you a chance t’ change your luck. Go on... pick a card...”

Holding up the glowing hand of cards, his almost maniacal grin faded when his path was suddenly blocked by a small and very familiar figure. Covering his surprise, disappointment, and all other emotions behind a well practiced poker face, he tilted his head to the side. “Bonjour, chère. Fancy meetin’ you here.”

She skidded to a stop between him and some man. She didn't necessarily give a damn about the people she was saving. She was tasked to neutralize the situation, and that's what the X-Men were doing. Or at least trying to do. Gambit's explosions certainly didn't help matters. That's why she put herself between him and the FOH guy.

She tipped her head slightly. "I'd say it's good to see you, Gambit, but you're doin' a lotta damage here." Marie gestured around them. That exploding card was certainly a good instance.

Just seeing her here, in one of their uniforms, stirred a million emotions within the Cajun man. She used to stand with him, stand against them, and her betrayal had cut quick. Remy LeBeau didn’t trust easily, but a part of him had trusted her, or at least wanted to, and she had thrown it away.

“You mean dis?” he asked, gesturing around at the fire and destruction that surrounded them. “Dis ain’t nothin’ compared t’ what I can do,” he finished darkly. Removing the charge from the cards in his hand, he folded them up and then fanned them out again, casually letting them play about his fingers.

“Never thought I’d see you standin’ up fo’ scum like dat.” He flicked an uncharged card at the man cowering behind her, smirking when the man flinched as the card harmlessly struck him.

She could see the mistrust written all over her face. She recognized it because it was a look she had been given by most of the X-Men. Her lip curled. She wasn't going to back down here. This was her choice, and she couldn't take the voices in her head. Magneto only seemed to want more from her.

"I know what you're capable of, Gambit." She crossed her arms. It's not like she hadn't seen it several times, relished in it even. But that wasn't her now. She stood opposite of him.

He was fast enough with the uncharged card. "You think I care about them?" Rogue tilted her head back. "Not even a little. You're destroyin' things just to do it. What point is there to make aside from givin'em more ammunition to fight with?" She retorted.

Of course she knew, she’d stood on his side before while he caused mayhem and destruction before she’d gone and gotten all moral. She’d had no problem with his methods then, it was only now that she had to clean up his mess that it was too much.

Truth be told, though, even Gambit wasn’t fully aware of the full extent of his powers as they stood now. Before they had been altered, though... even he couldn’t handle the sheer magnitude of them.

“What point?” he scoffed, the remaining cards seeming to vanish from his hand. “How about dat we ain’ gonna just stand by while dey try t’ register us, imprison us, kill us jus’ because we’re different? ‘cause dat’s what it’s gonna come down to.”

She was still on edge. It didn't matter if he put the cards away. He was a force to be reckoned with, and honestly, Rogue wasn't sure she could take him if she had to. At least with how shaky was with her ability.

"You don't know that." It was weak at best. "I'm not sayin' to let it happen, but killin'em? How is that gunna fix anythin'? More'll come in their place."

Remy just chuckled darkly at her response. It hadn’t slipped his notice that she was exclusively calling him by his code name, which wasn’t exactly strange but she said it different now that they were on opposite sides.

“Come on, Rogue, y’ ain’t never been dat naive,” he said in reply. She had to know it was coming, it was so obvious, but she was with the X-Men now in their cushy mansion and all their optimism and ideals. It was really telling that their leader saw the world through literal rose coloured glasses.

All this wasn’t really what was bothering him, though; it was her insinuation that he was out here to kill all these men in cold blood. Sure, he wouldn’t exactly shed a tear if one of them didn’t make it through this night, but he didn’t plan to intentionally murder anyone. “True, but dey gonna be scared. Kill off dis lot an’ de next might not be so quick ta step up.”

Of course she didn’t have to know that. She already made her mind up about him and he wasn’t about to try to change it.

She had to say it differently now. Everything was different. She wasn't one of them now. Marie wasn't being used and on the side of causing destruction. Did she like what she was doing now? No. She didn't want to protect the Friends of Humanity, but she was on the X-Men. Cyclops was leading, and he told her what to do. She knew all eyes were on her. No one really wanted her there, but this was where she was.

She swallowed hard and looked up at him. "You'll just incite another group to do worse." It wasn't like mutant hate wasn't rampant.

Her hands balled into fists at her side, still waiting for him to make a move. She didn't think he was as bad as some of them. She had noticed that he had yet to actually kill anyone. Or at least all of his actions were intended to blow things up. If people got hit by the blow back, so be it. Still, Rogue had to be prepared in case he decided to do more. And threatening the man behind her with a card was enough for her to interfere.

"You should leave."

Even though he didn’t show it, her words planted a seed of doubt in his head. Save from an all out war, what were these little battles going to accomplish? There would always be someone else to take the place of these scum, and eventually the replacements would have more money, more technology, and then things would get ugly.

“Den let dem do deir worst, ‘cause it ain’ gonna be enough,” he said. The battle was dying down, though, so Gambit saw little reason to argue with her suggestion that he mosey on out of here. If she wanted to stick around and clean up the mess then that was her choice, but he didn’t have to make it easy on her.

“Dey ain’ never gonna trust you,” he said. He didn’t directly identify The X-men as the ‘they’, but he knew she would understand him just fine. “An’ as for de Friends of Humanity,” he said the name as if the very taste of the words in his mouth disgusted him. As he said them, though, he just so happened to glance at the forgotten man who Rogue had stepped in to protect... just in time to see the ( ... )

Normally it'd be a lot harder to catch Rogue off guard like that, but what Gambit had said had touched a nerve and she'd drawn her attention to the other X-Men who were trying to assess the situation and stop the chaos. It was then that the man had made his moved.

And before she knew it, Marie was down on the ground with him on top of her. She looked at him, brows furrowed before craning her neck to look back at the man who had just fired the gun, the bullet bouncing off of a nearby building.

"You saved me." She was a little confused at that. She tried to get out from under him, but pushing him off wasn't so easy.

Gambit tried to blunt the impact slightly, hitting the ground with one hand first and trying to slow their descent, but he didn’t have a lot of time to think, just to act. For the briefest of moments he lay there, lifting his head enough to look into her eyes.

”You saved me.” She said it like she was surprised, like she had expected him to just let her get shot. It was enough to break the spell and kick him into action again, because while he may have saved her, the threat was still present. Swiftly getting off of her, Gambit spun around, one heavy boot quickly disarming the fallen man. With eyes somehow cold as ice yet burning with fire, he crouched down and grabbed the front of them human’s jacket, pulling him up to eye level.

“Dat was a big mistake, homme,” he threatened as the material fisted in his hand began to glow.

She was still in a little shock. Of course it shocked her. He was on the other side. Well she was on the other side now, and he still saved her. That and the fact she let her guard down in the first place. Rogue could have easily been shot and killed right in that moment.

She hadn't realized Remy had already moved off of her and towards the man when she stood. His hand was glowing when she started to put the pieces together. "Remy, no. You'll be no better'an him if you do this." Marie pleaded, using his real name for the first time.

It would be so easy. All he would have to do was let go, let go and leap away and he would put a bloody end to this sorry man’s life. There would be pieces of him spread across the road, the buildings... they would have to search for scattered and shattered teeth to even identify him. It would be quick, messy, and final ( ... )

She stopped and stood back from him. How could she reply to that? He'd just saved her and he let the asshole who tried to kill her go. Marie opened her mouth to say something, but what could she say? He was supposed to be the bad guys. Rogue knew what the Brotherhood did. She'd been a part of it for so long, and it only led to more destruction.

She swallowed sharply. It was best to ignore what he just said. Pressing her streaks behind her ear, she looked down. "Thanks. For saving me." She told him quietly.
