Why I love it: This is one of the more lively and fun carols to sing. I also particularly like the midieval sound to it in every version I've ever heard, particularly more pronounced in Lorena McKennitt's version, which adds the the depth of her usual mysterious ancient Irish undertones. Also, the mythology of a good-hearted king is one that speaks well to us: King Arthur, Duke Leto Atreides, King Mongkut of Siam after Anna got ahold of him, sengoku warlord Takeda Shingen, Henry V in that scene where he walked among his men in disguise prior to battle, and a host of others. Add in the good feelings and themes that are supposed to come with the Christmas season and you've got a hell of a story, told in a very memorable song.
