Episode 2 Episode 3 - The Fault in Our House
Oh Sehun recently got a new phone, a smartphone to be exact and it has one of those features which allow the phone to be getting underwater. The camera is super awesome and it’s also the newest type of smartphone that the brand had released. The color is white since Sehun said it would be a match to his skin type (“That is ridiculous, okay.” Jongdae sneered when he accompanied the younger to buy the item). The phone could be purchased by Sehun’s hard work in some part time jobs he’s been taking since the end of the second semester, together with Jongin, and it’s been no surprise anymore to the entire house that the two are seemingly became inseparable for these few times.
On the other hand, Kim Jongdae isn’t really fond of Sehun’s new phone because the thing took a lot of Sehun’s attention therefore keeping him away from the project they’ve been working for almost a month and a half now. Most of the time when Jongdae is starting a new part for their documentary videos, Sehun would be spotted at the back, busy taking selfies. Sometimes Sehun would just browse unnecessary thing on the internet, or answering Jongin on kakaotalk, or uploading something stupid into his newly made Instagram account, and it just sickened Jongdae so much because he wouldn’t stop giggling that stupid giggle of his, so one day
“I’m taking this.” He snatched away the phone from an absentminded Sehun whose hands are still forming the position like when it’s holding the phone. “You know I have endured so much and it’s just unbearable anymore, I can’t take it, let’s just focus on our project, okay?”
“Nonononononono give it back.”
“Sehun. I’m being really serious here.”
“I am also being very serious.”
“You are literally dating this thing it never went off from your hands longer than 3 minutes, you were even taking this to the toilet, when you’re showering, when you’re out to do grocery shop, when you’re watching TV-why do you need this when you’re watching TV goddamn it-I’m getting complains from Junmyeon about you not eating properly because you won’t let your eyes off from this goddamn thing!”
Sehun was about to give a comeback but he closed his mouth, turning solemn out of the blue on his seat, but then he’s going to say something a few seconds later and decided to close his mouth again, Jongdae crossed his arms with Sehun’s phone still in hands.
“I remember seeing Sehun typing something really fast in his brand new phone and then he chuckled and grabbed an apple from the fridge as he strode off upstairs-all done without once looking up from the phone-I don’t get kids these days I mean it’s not that cool, it’s just a phone, you should call or text as much as you need to but he’s literally like (imitating Sehun with both hands forming as if it’s holding a phone up close to his face) all day, he needs a break.” - Minseok.
“(Laughs for a complete 2 minutes) that kid needs to chill from his new phone.” - Luhan.
“Well I completely understand how it feels like to hold a new phone he had bought by himself for a couple of days but it’s been going on for a week now, I mean, I’m worried for his eyes he could be using glasses like Kyungsoo in no time if he continues doing that.” - Junmyeon.
“Did Junmyeon really say that Sehun’s going to wear glasses like me if he doesn’t want to stop goggling his phone? Excuse me but first things first I am not goggling over something until I wear glasses like this, it is heredity, okay. Second, what’s wrong with wearing glasses anyway? Is it because I look somewhat nerdy? I thought so. People are just fond of turning down somebody else.” - Kyungsoo, a little sensitive.
“You should see the tape where Kyungsoo got angry about wearing glasses it’s really funny. (Dies laughing while covering his mouth). Anyway, but, yeah I think Sehun got a little bit over the edge, I get it that he’s really happy to get rid of his tacky flip phone but-(starts to laugh again)-I (chokes, coughs)-oh god. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” - Baekhyun, needs a little slap on the face.
Sunday night, 07:30pm, at the living room
The tenants are mostly home by this hour except for Luhan, Minseok, and Chanyeol. Usually on weekends Minseok would go home to his parent’s house a little bit far from the city and stayed the night, coming back probably by Monday afternoon, Luhan got a shift as a cashier in an antique book store he had to fill every Sunday, and Chanyeol was just trying his luck down at Hongdae by bringing his guitar and started singing at the sidewalk, hoping for some changes people would toss into his guitar case.
Luhan made it first where he immediately throws his bag onto the couch and spreads his slender figure upon the trio sitting on it; Baekhyun, Kyungsoo, Jongdae. Kyungsoo is frowning amazingly at the moment; the idea of somebody from the outside who hasn’t wash up yet irks him, because he had showered, his entire body is clean and smells like babies.
“Hyung, hyung get up Kyungsoo doesn’t want germs all over his hygienic blue baby pyjama.” Baekhyun casually pats Luhan’s butt as he chews hazelnuts.
Junmyeon laughs as he sees Kyungsoo elbowing the other hard on the ribs.
“Hey guess what.” Luhan suddenly sits up, crowding the already crowded couch.
“What.” Everybody answers almost at the same time, Kris was just coming out from the shower, drying his damp hair with a towel.
Luhan checks around, makes sure that everybody has already gathered in the room; except for the two who are currently outside, and frowns, “Where’s Sehun?”
“Oh, he’s sulking in our room because I took his phone away.” Jongdae answered beside him, eyes still on TV.
“Are you serious?” Luhan chuckles playfully and being answered with a shrug.
“So that’s why he hasn’t been answering my messages for the past few hours…” Jongin trails away.
“You guys need to get a life, okay? I thought because you two are the youngest in this house you will go out every time hitting on girls and sneaking into clubs with fake IDs.” Kris is now joining them with a bowl full of fruits.
“But, Kris, they can already go to the clubs, they’re 20 they don’t need any fake ID.” Junmyeon answers flatly from the rug where he prone relaxedly, head focuses on TV.
“Oh-my bad-then why are you still here, go, go! Take Sehun out too, go to clubs!”
Jongin stares at Kris weirdly and proceeds to get up from his spot and leaves the living room, Yixing eyes Kyungsoo who eyes Jongin going upstairs.
Luhan sneered briefly at Kris’ comments and Jongin’s reaction and then continues what he’s supposed to say earlier, not bother to keep everybody gathered anymore. “Anyway, my cousin who used to live here for 4 years is going to come here again from China. I think he’s going to stay for good now, he said it’s easier living here than in China, but, you know, he’s going to be all sentimental about missing home and then probably going to change his mind again.”
Yixing gives a quick reaction to his story, “You mean Tao? Zitao, your cousin who’s really good at wushu?”
“That’s the one.” Says Luhan while taking a handful of grapes from Kris’ bowl.
Everyone hums agreeing upon Luhan’s news and nobody could look happier than Junmyeon because new tenant means his pocket money would increase its amount for the better. He was more than welcoming for the elder’s cousin’s arrival and is preparing to do a welcoming meal just like when Sehun and Jongdae first moved in, the owner is now asking Luhan what’s Tao’s favorite food.
“It doesn’t need to be grand, Junmyeon, he basically eats anything, you could just serve him delivered pizza that has been stored for three days and he still would eat it-I’m serious-he’s so positive yet sensitive all the time.” Luhan said and clarified when Junmyeon throws him a puzzled look.
“Oh I’m terribly sorry for not telling you that he’s going to come tomorrow, truthfully he had sent his stuffs to Korea around yesterday’s afternoon but it’s still in the moving company he’d requested because there’s just too many of them and I’m too lazy.”
Junmyeon sighs and scratches the upper part of his thick eyebrow, “…That’s, that’s okay. We could take it tomorrow and have it together with his arrival.”
“Perfect!” Luhan smiles beautifully until Junmyeon doesn’t even bother to complain anymore.
Monday morning where the tenants are having their weekdays off before the final exam starts around the same time, they are dividing tasks. Luhan is off to the airport with Yixing, Sehun, and Jongin to pick Tao up from the arrival section, while Junmyeon is off with Kris, Kyungsoo, and Jongdae to the moving company to pick up Tao’s stuff. Baekhyun and Chanyeol being so-obvious-but-keep-playing-not-obvious were already gone earlier at 8.30am probably cycling together around Han river and not going to come back before noon. But basically, they’re just avoiding tasks and all.
“So your cousin, what’s he look like?” Sehun asks Luhan when they’re standing in front of the arrival gate with a cardboard written “ZITAO” in Luhan’s hands.
“He’s alright. He’s pretty tall, actually he’s really tall, and he’s kinda tanned, he likes to change his hair color often but I’m sure he’s staying with black recently, anyway if it’s too hard you just have to look for a guy with dashing eyebags. That’s Tao alright.” Luhan answered cleanly without looking at the questioner even once.
“I still don’t get my phone back. I thought it’ll be pretty cool to not look like I care and really absorbed to my phone when I’m talking to Luhan ge, on the contrary he was the one who’s doing that when we’re in the airport and it kinda annoys me.” - Sehun, sulky as hell.
“Hey let’s count women in blue, I got one! One.” Jongin pokes Sehun’s shoulder and tries to lighten up the younger’s mood.
“There’s one, one.” Sehun follows emotionlessly.
Yixing folds his arms and eyes the youngest two cheerfully even though Sehun’s face showed him the complete opposite of his happy-go-lucky attitude. Yixing knows about Sehun’s phone issue, in fact the younger told him first that Jongdae was being mean and that he’s just happy about his very own purchase on a phone, still Yixing didn’t want to side and decided to tell him that it’s the best for now, that Sehun probably needs to sort out his priorities again and then maybe after that Jongdae would conceded and give him his phone back. Sehun thinks it’s the best advice he got compared with the other elders in the house he had asked after Yixing so the only one older than him that he doesn’t resent is Yixing.
Luhan on the other hand is thoroughly aware of Sehun’s newly spoiled behavior toward Yixing and he’s somehow unhappy about it and is now giving Sehun the treatment he’s been giving from the moment he sat on the driver seat, with Sehun sitting right beside him and the other two sitting at the back.
Luhan turns around to the three of them and found Sehun leaning his head on Yixing’s shoulder, with Yixing joining their silly ‘counting women in blue’ game.
“Hey hey there’s one again! I got four already.” Yixing exclaims.
“Hyung the one from before was wearing green, I’m really sure, so you’re behind with only three. I got five.”
“I’m leading! I got seven.” Jongin pumps his fist into the air.
“OH OH! Six.” Sehun giggles ridiculously, mood slowly climbs up again.
“Guys, guys, he’s here.” Luhan distracts their fun game even though no one has come out from the gate, he’s probably just getting text from Tao who just walked out from the plane.
In about 5 minutes later, the very guy Luhan had described to Sehun is coming out from the automatic sliding door on the arrival gate. He’s tall, tanned, has amazing eyebags-(“Wow okay those are some excessive eyebags, look at how dark those are, he looks like he hasn’t sleep for a week straight.” Sehun’s thought couldn’t get any louder he’s just thankful Tao couldn’t hear them)-Tao, is a guy who has an astounding sense of fashion and it includes the leopard print he’s wearing on his scarf, phone’s case, and his pair of shoes. Sehun and Jongin could hardly be seen cringing at the sight.
“Well… he’s… great.” Jongin murmured, which not failed to be caught in Luhan’s hearing.
“I told you he’s alright, oh and I haven’t mentioned that he loves leopard print. I’m amazed he’s capable of controlling the amount of it he’s wearing right now, he’s usually wearing more than this.”
Yixing tries hard to hold back a laugh because he’s just a very honest person and he thinks that this much is already overwhelming.
“Well… you know how leopard print tends to look like, it gives a certain feeling of… of… I don’t know it’s (forming a weird gesture with his hand) it’s just something you wouldn’t wear too much or too big or else it’ll get… overdramatic? Is it the right term to describe it? I think it’s overwhelming. Yes, yes, overwhelming, that’s the word (nods).” - Jongin, thoughts on Tao.
“When he comes out from the arrival gate, Jongin and I, we were just exchanging stares to each other and I turn around and I saw Yixing hyung shaking on his own quietly, man, I think this dude is something out of ordinary. Oh and I still haven’t got my phone back, fyi.” - Sehun.
“He looks like a tiger.” - Yixing, thoughts on Tao.
“Zitao!” Luhan lowers the board and runs to the taller guy whose arms are already spreading to welcome him.
They can hardly tell that they’re cousins or they’re probably just distant relatives who grew closer from dozen of family reunions the Chinese family usually had, because not even Yixing sees the resemblance in the two of them at slightest bit. Finally Luhan turns around to introduce him and explains all, “Guys this is Huang Zitao, if you feel like it’s too long you can call him Tao because really it’s his nickname, and uhh we’re actually pretty distant relatives-I can see you all questioning where’s the resemblance from the way you guys exchanging stares behind my back, boo yah-but yeah, after some times especially last year’s China new year holiday we’ve grown really close.”
“So! Here we have Jongin, Yixing and Sehun.” Luhan points them according to where they stand.
Each one starts shaking his hand and they could see Tao is specifically interested to know Sehun more, something about their introducing is so warm, plus Tao had already spotted a certain brand of clothes on Sehun right now and they’re both lost in the conversation about how comfortable the brand’s clothing is.
“…Okayyy, so we’re going home now.” Luhan starts to push Tao’s suitcases followed by a smiling Yixing and Jongin.
“…if you go to the store around mid-June until the end of July you’re going to get some discount or new promotion because they usually throw some big events around that time! And also, you might want to come around winter too, the overcoats are phenomenal!”
Tao and Sehun are seriously lost in their own conversation and Tao reached the part where he knows best about clothing store; the sale. Jongin is sitting together with them at the back and prefers to turn his head to the side where the road walks by, Yixing giggles and shakes his head on the front seat where he could spot Luhan driving and half rolling his eyes. All of the sudden Sehun just talk about how this one book is really cool and Luhan believes Tao is not a reader type and is being really sure this time that their conversation would end but against his prediction they’re just getting noisier; “Yeah it’s going to be a production movie, I heard it’s coming out soon.”
“Are you kidding I love that book, I’m not really into reading but ‘The Fault in Our Stars’???! Get out of here I’ve been dying to see that book to become a real movie!”
“Tao is really talkative… and it’s becoming a little bit annoying, I could even see Lu ge kept rolling his eyes while he was driving, I kinda think that he sort of snatched Sehun away from me too. I mean, it was all fun and counting games in the airport until that Tao comes around. (Pouts).” - Jongin.
“Hey we should all watch that movie together how’s that sound?” Tao leans forward and suggests to his older cousin.
Luhan responds half-heartedly, “What kind of movie is that? I’m not really into drama and romantic, you know that.”
“Oh ge come on!!! It’s a very popular discussion among my colleagues back in China, you must’ve discussed it in here too! People all over the world are going crazy over that story. Haven’t you heard? The Fault in Our Stars? Hazel Grace?”
“No.”
“Okay, so Tao, you will be occupying the empty room across the hall on the second floor, it’s really easy, see? You could spot your bedroom right from here. You’re next door beside Baek and Minseok’s, the laundry basket should be placed right beside your door and that’s pretty much it. Oh and there are two bathrooms, one upstairs and another’s at the further backside of the TV room. So, welcome!”
“Thanks.” Tao smiles and gives an unexpected hug for Junmyeon who was rather confused the first time but returns it anyway.
“He’s pretty decent, but he gives out this aura of being a tough man. Like ok maybe he’s sweet and sentimental but when you’re really messing with him he’s going to straight kicking your ass.” - Kris, thoughts on Tao.
“Tao is such a vivid individual, well I mean he hugged everybody when we all arrived home. I was just parking my bike and walk in when he suddenly greets me with a hug, it’s all new to me, to have this kind of person staying with us. I mean, Sehun is a spoiled little shit (laughs), and Jongdae was a walking sass when he got in here the first time. (Raised brows).” - Chanyeol.
“I can tell that I’m getting a new playful friend. My guts are telling me that this one is going to be another Kyungsoo to me, weak and easy to bully. (Bursts to laugh).” - Baekhyun.
When Tao finished unpacking his stuff into his new room, Sehun took him for a short tour around the house and told him about the project he’s been doing with Jongdae and then taking him to the cupboard under the stairs for the last part of the tour. Tao is filled with amazement and immediately sits down on the chair right in front of the camera, waving and fixing his hair. Sehun explained how he could come once in a while to this room, to tell the camera what he’s been doing all day, how he adapt to the new house, how the people are behaving toward him. Tao claps his hands in excitement at the idea of it, (“It feels like doing a reality show on TV!”).
Suddenly, Jongdae called Sehun from their shared room and Sehun gave Tao a signal to wait.
“Hey you could take it back.” Jongdae said when the younger finally appeared in the room, Sehun’s new phone in hand but head’s not turning to face him.
Sehun watches his phone carefully and gives a disbelieving stare to the elder.
“Do you not want it? If you don’t then I’ll just take this back-”
“Nonono okay I’ll take it,” Sehun takes the phone really really slowly.
“OH JUST TAKE IT ALREADY.”
“OKAY OKAY. Thanks. I’m sorry.”
“Just promise me you won’t lock your eyes on that thing all the time anymore.”
“Promise.”
“Good.”
The Fault in Our Stars
“The Fault in Our Stars, 12 tickets please-Do you take cards here? Ok, here you go-thank you.” Junmyeon turns around from the ticket booth while flaunting the long ass piece of tickets as the requirement to get in to theater 4.
Everybody agrees to go just like Tao requested, he was going over and over again how he wanted the entire house to watch the movie, even Minseok didn’t go home to his parent for this, Luhan folds his arms together while repeating for only God knows how many times; “I don’t watch this kind of movie!” he saw the poster and he thinks it definitely not his style of movie, he’s more of the suspense and action type. Jongin just shrugs with thought that he's just probably going to sleep in there later, while Baekhyun, Chanyeol, and Jongdae swarm the snack booth, buying a bunch of sweet caramel and salty popcorns (extra butter).
“Do you think this movie will be that good? I’ve never read the book, honestly, so I’m sorry for not knowing.” Yixing asks truthfully to Tao with questioning looks and Tao just chuckles at the elder.
“Don’t worry ge just sit beside me and I’ll tell you what’s going on.”
“I’ll probably just shrug it off you know, this movie couldn’t be that saddening.” Kris waves his hand casually.
“Oh you might want to take your words back, Kris, my sister read the book, she said it’s seriously sad. It’s about a couple who have cancers.” Minseok stated while sipping his cola.
Kyungsoo on the other side of the lounge, a more private couch is concentrating on his little notebook filled with medical terms. He was against the idea of watching this movie with the others but Tao pleaded so desperately in front of his room two days ago and it was just then, coincidentally, Jongin showed up on the stairs;
“You could just note the most essentials from your subjects and have it with you in a small notebook so that you could read it later. Just saying.” He said before he slammed his door gently behind.
Kyungsoo’s attention is really centralized on the blue little notebook he’s holding, once a while his head would look up and his lips move so quickly as if he’s casting a spell, his circular glasses comes down and he adjusts it again onto the bridge of his nose. Jongin spotted him despite boisterous situation coming from the others brief discussion about the movie, he gets up and decided to approach him. The elder’s face is back buried in the small book like minutes ago, not noticing the presence of the younger.
“Hey.”
Kyungsoo looks up and it's almost as if he just saw a ghost only with different tint of color on his cheeks which supposed to be pale but in this case, it turns wildly pink. He eyes far to the back, suspiciously directing his gaze to a harmless Sehun, now back with his phone, taking selfie with Tao.
“…hey.”
“What are you learning.”
“…oh? Uhhh, medical stuff, you know, blood pressure, vessels, blood circulars, all that stuff. You won’t be interested, it’s too stomach-turning.” Kyungsoo regretted his choice of vocabulary as he bites his tongue immediately after that.
“‘Won’t be interested’ huh, we’ll see about that,” Jongin snatches the little notebook away and flips open some pages, closes it again, and smiles, “Yep you’re right I’m not interested at all.”
Kyungsoo forced a laugh.
“But you could tell me a bit though, maybe I’ll be interested if you’re telling me.”
“Uhhh….?”
“Hey you two stop flirting and get your asses here the theater had opened already!” Sehun teases them from behind and Jongin forced to stop staring and smiling at the big eyed fellow.
Jongin touches a bit of Kyungsoo’s shoulder and mumbles a very gentle “Let’s go” as he stands up and casually waits for him to pack his stuff into his bag. He missed the sight of a gaping Kyungsoo trailing him from behind with a little hint of smile on his blushing face.
In the theater, Luhan picks the furthest seat next to a wall after a brief argument with Jongin because the latter had decided from home that he wants to sleep and not watch the movie, but since Luhan is older and Jongin had to respect the choice he had stated, therefore he gave the seat up and directly positioned himself beside a lonely Kyungsoo at the other side of the line. Sehun comes and sits beside Luhan who has his hand propping his chin, the former smiles playfully with a little tilt of his head here and there, forcing Luhan to smile even though he’s holding it back. Tao sits beside Sehun and everyone just basically picks the seats randomly, with Jongdae fighting with Baekhyun that he wants to sit in the middle but Baekhyun wins and so he doesn’t want to sit beside an annoying sass, Chanyeol mediates them both by sitting in between. The more mature ones sit randomly together; Junmyeon already sits comfortably between Yixing and Minseok, with an eating popcorn Kris right next to Jongin, the line is completely booked.
Throughout the movie, even though Jongin finally decided to watch it, he fell asleep somewhere when Hazel starts to get even closer to Augustus, his head dangling back and forth in his seat and he was almost hitting Kris on the head when the latter pushes him exasperatedly to the other side where his head landed on Kyungsoo’s right shoulder.
Kyungsoo’s eyes were about to come out when Jongin finally sleeps on his shoulder, tender snores escaping his lips. For a short moment everyone notices them and turn their heads to only tease him and move back to the screen again, Kyungsoo shakes his head.
Junmyeon and Minseok are having an awe moment toward the actress who portrays Hazel Grace and how beautiful she is even with all those oxygen tanks and rubber tube surrounding half of her face, Baekhyun and Chanyeol are, surprisingly, paying their full attentions, a very rare moment if one might add. They have officially joined the club with Tao who’s on his way collecting tears at the moment, Sehun couldn’t feel it yet so he decided to open his phone again.
“Wow shut it down the light’s blinding in here!” Luhan whispers annoyingly beside him.
Sehun obeyed right away and puts his phone back into his jacket immediately.
Eventually the scene where Augustus fell sick comes, and he, Hazel, and Isaac are standing in the church, practicing Augustus’ pre-funeral. Kyungsoo is unconscious of himself whom also crying along with Hazel when she’s reading her funeral speech for Augustus, he sobs a little bit and Jongin wakes up because of it.
“Why-why are you crying.”
Kyungsoo wipes his tears away and covers his mouth with his hand as he points to the screen, unable to explain what’s going on. Jongin stares at the screen and to Kyungsoo, and to the screen again, until he’s fully awake and continues watching the movie.
Silently, one by one starts making pathetic sound of sucking up snots except for Luhan who kept his words until the end, that this kind of movie is not his kind of movie. Then the scene changes to Hazel’s phone ringing at dawn, proceeded to her crying in despair, indicating that Augustus had really left, passed away. The tears broke out astoundingly in there, mostly girls are quietly sobbing right now. Luhan peeks to his side and saw all of his colleagues drowning in tears, Kyungsoo covers his entire face with his hands, Jongin bending down solemnly, even Minseok is leaning forward and exhales a deep breath, he could only predicted what Tao looks like right now; the guy’s miserable with a tissue in hand, crouching his tall figured body in one seat distressingly looking like an enormous baby.
“What could possibly be saddening about this, this is life, people come and go just like that.” Luhan thinks to himself, “Besides, this is just a movie, it’s fictional.”
Sehun broke to a halted sob beside him and he turns around, feeling sorry a little bit.
“Oh God, this is so-uhh-oh God-this is so saaaad.” He said between nasally voice and hardcore snivels.
“There, there.” Luhan hesitatingly pats his hair.
To his surprise Sehun leans slowly to his body, carefully placing his head on his chest. Luhan had no choice but to welcome him just like that and embraces his half upper body altogether. “There, there, Sehun, it’s just a movie, it’s not going to happen.”
Sehun, being completely sad and overwhelmed by the movie is acting like a baby koala all of the sudden, stretches out his arms to hug Luhan’s entire torso.
“…okay. Okay.” Luhan whispers awkwardly.
“I will never watch movies with that genre again.” - Luhan, suspiciously pink on the cheeks that night after they got home from the theater.
The rest of the tapes are silly boys quoting from the movie, which mostly; “Okay? Okay.”
