Six thirty is the ideal time for Kim Jongin to show up at the far corner of the street where the light is usually still on until seven o’clock because winter is turning the sky darker than usual. He wraps himself tightly under his winter coat, wool turtle neck his mom had sent a couple days ago, and a t-shirt underneath it as well. He didn’t want to take a shower that morning, it’s too cold. Jongin left the apartment building where he lives alone in the tenth story, three neighbors, one is too damn nosy, one has an acute issue of sleep walking and is fond of knocking on his door around four to five in the early morning. Jongin would usually ignore it because the last time he tried to wake the neighbor up, the guy kicked him down there. It wasn’t really nice to be remembered again.
The last one is the guy who always ran out of sugar every Sunday. Because he bought his sugar specially in sachets, Jongin raised his brows the first day he moved in to the apartment, which was Sunday. The Chinese man with an exceptional body height got him fooled with his cold hearted and at the same time, good looking face.
By the time Jongin walks out of his condo at exactly quarter past six, the sleep walking neighbor named Jongdae is already awake, rummaging the mails he got and ripping apart some that he didn’t even read.
“Off to work, Mr. Kim?”
Byun Baekhyun is riding the elevator up and appears right in front of his eyes as it chanted ‘ding’ calmly at the tenth floor. Jongin nods and smiles, with that neighbor there’s no need to talk so much about anything, at all. Because then he would attack him with questions, and more questions, and add another question.
Jongin takes subway to work. He has a car but he only use it on weekends, streets are less packed and he wouldn’t be so stressed. Once a while he would glance at his shining gold wrist watch and narrowed his eyes because the thing has no numbers, just two pointy needles showing the time with personal estimation. When he reached the subway station the time has already turned to half past six.
Next train is to Gangnam-gu station. Gangnam-gu station. Passengers with the mentioned destination, please stand near line three.
He took a gentle jog to the side. And there it happened.
People are crowding the path and he couldn’t even stand straight, there’s a plus and minus point in taking subway and one of the negative points is that it will always be full of human every morning. He often got left behind by the first train because it’s too full and had to wait for another train to come by.
But the crowd is particularly different that morning, they’re calmer and less rushed. So he could actually stand still, walking in random lines to get in to the train. He looks to the right and caught a face of a man he acknowledged of, a man that somehow managed to sit still in his heart even though he had broken his heart years ago.
He was his first love. The first thing that had come into his mind is ‘of all places why here?’ Jongin was expecting to meet him again for as long as he could remember, but not here. Not in the crowded, busy place that is the subway station.
Jongin stared at him for so long that he didn’t even realize people around him are moving forward to queue to get in first to the upcoming train, he stands still in his place until the man gets inside. Looking the smallest from everybody, he disappears from Jongin’s sight along with the train. Damn it by the way, he missed it again.
Second year of high school was probably not the very best year for Jongin. He always got letter of commemoration from the headmaster for dressing against the rules, fighting in the corridor, and skipping classes. He basically went as bad as he could. He made no friends, because he preferred to go alone. Everyone could talk to him just because they’re afraid, he liked to seek avenge when things didn’t go his way. He was a walking trouble.
Then one day a senior transferred into the school and Kim Jongin was changed into a greater guy. He dressed nicely, he cut his hair, the grades were climbing up, everyone was wondering where had the wild and could-not-be-tamed Kim Jongin gone to. The senior that made the change for the better is none other than Do Kyungsoo. A small figure boy with a huge eyes and exceptionally irresistible aura, even when he blinked the girls found him too cute.
No one has ever known that Jongin had a huge crush on him, though. Jongin kept everything to himself. Changed from what it used to be hanging in the school cafeteria to force the freshman to give him money, he went to the library turning into a creepy loser in love, staring at Kyungsoo from between the racks, expressing nothing.
Came a day where Jongin thought Kyungsoo had finally noticed him, it’s because he dropped his little notebook full of reminders of tasks and homework.
“Hey uh you dropped this.”
“…Thanks.”
Kyungsoo smiled at him and Jongin walked home that day, smiling like crazy. His mom had to ask him for so many times, afraid that her son might be sick. His two elder sisters suggested that maybe their baby brother is in love.
Still, Jongin said nothing.
Silence, apparently was Jongin’s biggest mistake. Loving someone in silence is not going to help things to go to anywhere, proved when homecoming prom happened. Alumni of a year or two were expected to come and celebrate along with the senior and the sophomore.
Jongin, standing behind a wall near the lockers were trying to put up some words together, thinking that it might be too tacky or too forcing. What if he slips his tongue when he asks Kyungsoo to prom later? What if, even worse, he slips and fall face first onto the floor before he even reach the guy. What if, worst, he couldn’t talk at all with Kyungsoo waiting in front of him, face straight and bored.
Too many thoughts, he didn’t realize that Kyungsoo is sitting alone in front of a class, waiting and looking around the hall while an alumnus was walking closer, ready to ask him to go to prom with him.
“You know what I like the most about the end of the month?”
“No.”
“Paychecks.”
Luhan is spinning around in his spin chair, talking nonsense as he usually does everyday at the office with his smug face on and different pale colors of neckties with the same pattern-he wears blue sky color every Tuesday-with a coffee mug in his hand, written ‘I AM THE BEST’. Jongin hates him.
“Hey listen to me, I met a guy yesterday when I was in a dvd rental place. He’s tall and slender-no I think he’s less weighted-so he has silver as the color of his hair, and he shouts ‘Yehet’ when he found a movie that he likes.” Luhan laughs off his chair and Jongin narrows his eyes at the elder.
“I gotta go.”
“’Lright! Seeya later!”
Aside from being a bit too talkative and random most of the time, Luhan is actually a great guy but Jongin just hates him. That’s all to it. Beside, he’s so oblivious about him hating on him, Jongin thinks he’s going insane in slow motion when he’s around the other.
Time is half past ten, Jongin is quickening his step to the stairs that led underground through his ride home. The last train is on eleven o’clock and he thanks his manager to let him go back before the mentioned time. Otherwise he will have to take a cab and spend like fifteen to seventeen bucks which is a little too much because really his house is not that far, it’s just because the traffic at this time sucks a little bit.
What he isn’t expecting to happen, instead, happens right away when he arrived quietly at the station. The same guy from this morning that he purposely avoided, has once again stand upon his eyes. Alone, free of crowd.
This time, he turns his head around and met Jongin in the eyes. Time suddenly walks slowly and Kyungsoo’s lips stretches open to a smile in a slow motion in Jongin’s mind, and he felt like he had travelled back to the high school days. Silenced, and star struck. Amazing that after all the time he had went over without ever meeting the elder even once, the effect that got to him whenever the other smiles is always turning him soft and goowey.
“Hey.”
Jongin just stares straightly at him, face unreadable, lips tight. “…Hey.”
“Uh so… were you coming home from work?”
“Yeah.”
“Oh, me too.”
There was a brief moment of silence included with Kyungsoo looking away from the piercing stares Jongin had given him since earlier. The train hasn’t come yet, and it feels like shrinking to elf’s size for Kyungsoo because after all the younger is towering over.
A few minutes later another man appears from the distance, breaking Jongin’s stares apart. He is now dying to get out of there as soon as possible, the man smiles, and when he smiles Jongin felt like losing. The man throws so many apologies at Kyungsoo with caring touches here and there, Kyungsoo turns around and becomes so happy in a split second at the arrival of him, Jongin swears he could hear the sound of his heart vaguely, breaking apart.
“Oh? Jongin isn’t it? Fancy meeting you here, it’s like a sudden school reunion!”
Jongin only smirks and turns to his normal face again.
“Yes. School reunion.”
“I was supposed to pick him up, but my boss told me earlier that I couldn’t go home before eleven, but then he cancelled the order so here I am!” he talks cheerfully.
Jongin just couldn’t miss the sight of a silver ring with a beautiful diamond eyes wrapped with small rubies around it lingering on both of their wedding fingers, and he darts his eyes back quickly before Kyungsoo could notice and tries to hide his hand away.
Slow music is playing through the ballroom, everyone starts feeling romantic and dance to the music. Some are just sleeping at the corner, drunk and smelled like vomit. Jongin sat on the beverage table, watching the two guys spinning around in the middle of the room, feeling like they’re the only living creatures at the moment. He squished the plastic cup he’s been holding and walks straight to them.
The next thing he knew he was grabbing Kim Junmyeon by the collar, pushes him down to the floor whilst punching and kicking brutally, Do Kyungsoo was trying to pull him away until the security comes in and escort him away.
“Why did you do that?”
Do Kyungsoo was standing with his arms folded on his chest, brows aligned together, facial expression is nowhere near amused. They’re in the hospital, waiting for Junmyeon to recover from the quick treatment for his purple eyes and bleeding nose. Jongin was just staring back at him with absolutely nothing expressed on his face just like usual and he was suddenly shaking his head.
“It’s obvious. I like you. A lot. I like you a lot.” He decided to give away all the pride he has left.
Kyungsoo fell silent in front of him. He looked up to see his face and decided to do next, the elder is staring down at him looking bewildered and sad at the same time, Jongin tilted his head confusedly at the sight. He was once told by his mother that he’s not really good with other’s feelings, and that include facial expressions.
“Can’t you just-” Kyungsoo took a deep breath, obviously frustrated by the motion he did with his lips and closed eyes. “Oh forget it.”
“No, wait. You have to tell me, I don’t like being left behind curious.”
Kyungsoo bit his lower lips and sighed as he walked away from the younger, Jongin followed him outside and stopped right beside his car. Kyungsoo was still holding on with his frustrated state that Jongin couldn’t find out why. Instead of telling him how sorry he was about punching Junmyeon earlier, Jongin pulled him into a sudden, long kiss right then and there.
Surprisingly Kyungsoo kissed him back just as hard, just as needy.
The kisses turned to wild touches and Kyungsoo struggled to open the car’s door, whilst stripping Jongin off his tux.
“Well, we better go now.”
Junmyeon said a few moments later after minutes of awkward chit chats-Jongin casually told them that he’s making approximately four thousand dollars a month-Kyungsoo couldn’t take his eyes off of Jongin for even a second. Jongin moves a little bit side to side and glances back at him once in a time when Junmyeon didn’t notice. Junmyeon smiles for the last time, don’t know if he’s glad he’s free to go and hoping he wouldn’t ever stumble upon Jongin again or he really is sincere about it. He walks away, hand pulling Kyungsoo’s arm gently with a soft demand to follow him along.
Kyungsoo walks away as well. jongin is still watching his back, seconds later turning around to get a last glimpse of him. See you later, the younger thought.
He still remembered exactly what Kyungsoo told him the morning they woke up in the car, satisfied and almost naked. “I think I’ve been mistaken between love and lust.”
Jongin didn’t say anything to that, he just put on his clothes, placed his jacket on his shoulder and made his way out of the car. Junmyeon was walking half way from the emergency room where he was nursed to health that night, he was limping and his purple eye is recovering a bit well. No more bleeding nose.
“I don’t know about you but the way you kissed me last night, I think it had something more than lust.” Jongin smiled weakly and walked away after he bid goodbye to him and said a gentle ‘sorry’ to the approaching Junmyeon.
Jongin doesn’t know about Kyungsoo but something in the latter’s glistening eyes earlier that he’s so sure about, telling him that he might be mistaken about what he said that morning after the prom night.
