[comics] Poll time / canon-consistency in fic (DCU)

Jun 07, 2007 11:51

The context for this post - besides, of course, my usual overweening neuroses - is that I'm currently writing a fic set about a year/18 months *after* the 52/missing year. I'm also reading, usually through unhappy eyes, current canon ( Read more... )

I didn't do the poll because I only got into DC 'verse last year some time and am currently going through the back catalog of Nightwing, The Outsiders, Teen Titans v3, and Robin (if I can ever get my hands on it) before I attempt to tackle 52 and then the OYL lines. I don't know if that counts as current continuity yet. I'm working my way there, though. In a Marvel vein, same with Captain America. I blame Jube, as that one is purely all her fault.

I would be reading Batman, but holy hell is that a lot of catching up to do just for one title. I'd also like to read whatever Roy's title is called; I can never remember. At heart, Dick Grayson and Tim Drake own me and I'll follow any title that covers their lives.

As for fic, I tend to read those authors I trust, regardless of if they follow current continuity or not. One of the reasons for fanfiction (my personal view here) is to take established characters in a direction the canon does not take them. Some might call that AU, and that's fine. Whatever works for you, I say do it! However, I do appreciate being told when something divurges from canon. But as I tend to not read some titles until months after I've read fic for them, it's not vital. Comics spoilers don't affect me in the same viseral way television/movie ones do. It's weird.

Uh, does all that yammering answer your questions?

This certainly helped answer my questions! If you ever need a hand in the back-reading you're doing, give me a shout, yes?

He used to be in The Titans, then Outsiders; he pops up in Green Arrow; JLA v.4 seems to be his new home.
...that help?

Definitely. I'm still feeling strange canon aches, after being here for over a year and learning to love contradictions and quantum possibilities, but your comment's reminding me why I *am* here.

Thank you. :D

Eeeee! I shall keep that in mind for when I am actually at my computer with my list of "To Read" comics. Yes, I am *that* kid.

Actually, it does. I've heard good things about the current GA run, so I shall see about laying hands on it if it also includes Roy goodness. I don't know why I thought he had a title called Arsenal.

N'awww, shucks. For reals? I am finding myself enamored of Jason as well, the scrapper. Oh, Bats. How you mangle the minds of all young boys you touch. And how, in their own fucked up ways, they aspire for your approval. Granted, that's Dick more than the others, but yeah. I've not gotten to the Steph/Spoiler arcs yet.

Also? I know I didn't get into the titles until after all that craziness happened but I MISS KON-EL! ;_; COME BACK SUPERBOY AND BE THE OTHER PART OF MY OTP/OT3, PLEASE. Which all this attachment to characters is baffling to me as I originally got into comics from X-Men (sporadically) and I *never* felt this much for any of them. Even Wolverine, who I love like one can only love a cranky Canadian Admantium Badger, never made me actually ache for his stories. Granted, it's been a long, long, long time since I read any of those, so maybe I should give them a go again, coming from the new perspective that fandom has given me about my fannish materials.

Also also, Bart Allen. I can't believe I forgot him first time around. So, I need to get a hold of the Kid Flash books and whatever title he's in Post-IC and OYL and all that as well because Bart Allen is spastic, spastic love.

Thank you. :D

You are quite welcome. I'm almost always up for fannish discussions and finding new things.

At one point, he did. I don't know if it's any good; you'd want to ask derryderrydown.

There's this pretty ace four-issue mini series starring Arsenal that was done a while back (where my icon is from). I could send it your way if you're interested.

I MISS KON-EL! ;_;
Oh god, I know. Like, I thought I was fine with that being the end of his story arc for now, but now I miss the big guy.

That would be made of sweetness and light, if you'd be so inclined to lay it on me. Thank you!

I blame you for the Conner love blindsiding me, by the way. I was at peace with how his arc ended because it was still in character and totally something the big lug would do. Then you were all going on about Bat-Bag and the Batgirl issues he was in and then I went back and reread Teen Titans for his and Tim's relationship and the dams burst. Because, based on throw-away comments by folks, I have a feeling that when I do lay hands on the latest Robin issues (since IC and 52 and all that) that ALL WILL LOVE TIM AND DESPAIR because of how he's (not) coping.
