Ranting Ranty Rants

Things about the SPN / J2 fandom that bug me lately, in no particular order (ranting about it here because fanficrants is (a) sick of SPN rants and (b) doesn't allow for my entitlement complex):

1. Shipping wars. Jesus fuck, the shipping wars. It hasn't quite reached the Heron vs. Harmony levels of animosity, but the Wincesters and the Dean/Castiel people are ( Read more... )

Oh, wow. Can I just say "co-signed"? There's only one of these that I sorta disagree with and that's the incest warning. If the pairing is marked, I'd expect people to know going in that Sam/Dean, John/Dean, Michael/Lucifer/, Jo/Ellen or whatever the new OTP du jour has become is incestuous.

But otherwise, yes yes yes. The shipping wars mostly amuse me because I'm a gen sort of girl, and the only canon pairings on this show involve people that no one ever seems to bother getting huffy over. And if it's not actually canon and stands no chance of becoming canon, then what does it matter what people ship? Sam/Dean or Dean/Castiel, neither is more valid than the other. Maybe there is subtext for both (which is itself subjective), but neither is going to happen onscreen. People just have their preferences and the entire fandom just needs to stop beating each other over the head with why "your pairing sucks and is ~shallow~ while mine is the height of True Love, so there ( ... )

Yeah, I actually agree about the pairings serving as a warning--I guess I should have said that if it isn't in some way clear from the pairing/summary that the fic is going to contain incest, that's something that ought to be warned for. I've seen a lot of writers--particularly Sam/Dean writers--who won't do either, and I think it's part of the mindset that assumes their ship is canon (and so, of course, no need to warn for it).

I read someplace that a 'fan' tried to get Danneel Harris tossed out of a convention and was frankly horrified. I can't even wrap my head around that mindset.

Oh man. Word. I'm having trouble choosing the one that I agree with the most {or: the one that's the most hilarious}.

PS -- I'd also really like it if people stopped writing Dean getting raped. >_<

...I would put that, but I've written it, so it might be a little hypocritical. :P

I do wish people would stop using rape as cheap emo fodder, though. And Dean does always seem to end up on the wrong side of it....

Gah I totally agree with you here. D: I hate gf basing in general but in fics it makes me so irritated. Come on guys, I know you want the boys together in your fic but the gfs don't have to be evil for a relationship to fail. (also, danneel is sassy and gen seems adorable, I can't even wrap my brain around hating them ( ... )

I've never understood the gf/wife bashing--it's so petty and sexist, especially when both women seem pretty cool (not to mention gorgeous) and both guys seem happy with them.

I just don't see why people feel the need to argue for a ship, especially when neither one of them is or ever will be canon. I ship D/C because I like the dynamic between the two characters (and I think it would be hot). I'm assuming most S/D shippers have basically the same rationale. I don't get why everybody feels like they have to argue about it.

I'd have to say that about covers it!. Wanky Fandom FTW!

As for what's canon, I think the overlooked distinction is that Slash *Fandom* is canon (spoken of, shown onscreen) and Slash *Fic* is canon (spoken, and shown onscreen, albeit truly awful Fic) but no, not the actual Sam and Dean slash I'd pay to see. That's a distinction without a difference for some folks, myself included when I found myself yelling "Slash is Canon!" after "Monster... ;)

But no, Sam and Dean haven't gone gay yet, Zachariah's rant about their "erotically codependent" relationship notwithstanding.

I think this fandom (possibly because of all the fanservice?) is one of the worst I've seen for shippers insisting their ship is canon and that anyone who doesn't see it is DELUDED. Bugs the fuck outta me.

I think even Jo/Dean has fervent adherents, but yeah, there's a sense of entitlement. After coming from a fandom where fans were less than crap, it's a pleasant change to be serviced, but it does up the wank.

I think I love you. I've been stalking you for fic, but I'm going to friend you now. And just so you know -- I mostly hate people too... Can I just say a particular HELL YEAH to #5, 7 and 9? In fact - FUCK YES... and my God - I've never even heard of #2...

*grin* Go for it. Misanthropes should stick together.

/lame attempt at irony.

Seriously, I wish I'd never heard of #2. And it's probably not a really common thing, objectively speaking, but I've come across it more than three times searching through Delicious tags and it's just...eurgh.
