First of all, I have a LOT to say, and I really hope I don't leave out anything significant. But more importantly, I hope I explain everything well enough and don't over-explain. Anyway, here we go.
Okay, so here is a problem I've been having since October 13th, when my housemate moved out. As stated above, I no longer have Wireless OR Internet access at home. (Right now, I'm at a copy center, using one of the computers there.) Obviously, that's a great loss to me, not to be able to use the Internet at home, especially being that I had access ever since I brought my "new" computer home, about a month after I moved into the new place. (
This entry, written shortly after I got the computer home, gives all its stats.)
Anyway, though we have Broadband Internet at home, I was using a wireless dongle to get onto the Internet. In the laundry room downstairs is a wireless router attached to a broadband modem. And when
teeebone would visit, he would bring his laptop and access the Internet wirelessly. Life was good.
But then, ever since October 13th, right after my housemate (whose room was right next to mine) moved out, I've never been able to connect to the Internet anymore. What's also weird is that
teeebone can no longer connect from his laptop either! Now, at the time, my landlady, who lives upstairs (I live in the basement), was also without Internet access. So she called Comcast and had a technician come out. They were originally scheduled to come out on Tuesday, 10/21, which would've been perfect since I would've been home that day. For some reason, they changed the appointment to that Wednesday! :( The technician installed a brand new modem, and my landlady now has her Internet access back. However, I still do not, and
teeebone still can't connect either. We've both been on the phone to Comcast several times (he was on the phone with Tech Support for an hour one night). and nothing has changed.
The last time I talked to Tech Support (about a week ago), I asked if someone could please come out again and look at the modem and router. My request was refused because I was told that if the landlady could get onto the Internet, and our computers show that we have a strong signal (which it does), then it must be a problem either with my computer (but if that's the case, how come
teeebone can't get on, and he has a nearly new laptop?) or the Linksys brand wireless router, and that I should contact Linksys. I haven't done that yet, and I don't know if I will. I'm not even sure what the point would be. I mean, is it possible that new modem somehow does not communicate with the wireless router?
[EDITED TO ADD: I also asked Tech Support if the Hexadecimal code had changed since installation of the new modem, and I was told it hadn't.]
Last weekend, I moved into the larger room that my ex-housemate vacated. I had hoped that maybe the room was wired in such a way that I would finally be able to connect to the Internet again. Wrong! And
teeebone still can't connect either, which leads me to believe that there is just no Internet access downstairs, period.
So I guess the main question I have is:
Why on earth were
teeebone and I able to connect to the Internet just fine for the past six months and now we can't anymore?
*sigh* I almost feel like giving up, except that I have to have my Internet access at home, and I won't stop until I get it! But understandably, I'm beyond frustrated. I hope someone can help me in a hurry, especially since this has been going on for way too long. I mean, I still don't understand why we lost Internet access when my housemate moved out.
Does anyone think they can possibly shed some light on this? I hope I've given enough information. And I should point out that even though I don't have Internet access (and won't be able to reply to this post until tomorrow when I get to work), I can at least read my email on my cell phone tonight. I can read replies more in detail from work tomorrow.
[By the way,
teeebone, please feel free to chime in. I'm sure there are things I've left out that you can add, as well as things that you can explain better than I can. *smooch*]
