and yes, the vector has indeed switched in a very positive direction you know thrice as much about...
as for the board question, i have only a somewhat obvious observation, i.e. somebody has to invite you there. That sort of a connection is not of your garden variety networking type though...
The route I am most familiar with both personally and by association is via establishing a successful startup yourself. In the post-success stage, one is likely to be afforded a type of "sage" status by the surrounding circle that lends itself to a number of (usually simultaneous) outcomes - a)you get invited on the board(s) of newly established organizations by the people that consider you a "mentor" and wish to leverage your supposed valuable advice and connections; b)you get invited on the boards of existing/established companies since you now possess an aura of experience and success; and c)it becomes relatively easy to "introduce" people to each other, as a number of them start congregating around to either pitch or run ideas by you. if you are good in introducing right people to each other and they get things rolling - you get essentially auto-invited on their board (executive or advisory).
I guess the other route is to be a trusted person of some VC people...which is a sure way of getting yourself installed on a board or two to be essentially their mouthpiece for a while. :) I know a number of folks like that...some have simply worked their way through the proverbial "mail room" at the fund....one caveat - you have to somehow get to that mail room in the first place...and they tend to be fresh out of biz school and ready/willing to do whatever for 20 hrs out of every 24. :)
is the board seat one of your goals for the eventual future?
