Ack, very timely reminder not just of the problem of people dressing up as "reggae" or something, but of all of us calling other people on it.

And if people could stop dressing up as gypsies, that would be great as well. A student of my friend told me he's planning to go as a gypsy "with a knapsack full of baby dolls, because you know how gypsies kidnap babies?" Good god. I told him it was a racist costume, and he was genuinely stumped as to why this would offend people who thought about it for more than a second.

And I had completely forgotten until now that I'd dressed up as a gypsy when I was a kid. Ugh.

Heh - I know what you mean; my sister and I were dressed up as Native Americans one Halloween. And I think we were living in Chicago at the time. *facepalm!*

Unfortunately it's a default costume for lots of kids. I definitely remember seeing children dressed as gypsies -- well, pretty much up to the present. In the U.S. at least, there's very little awareness about actual Romani people and the persecutions they've suffered.

And of course, you get to wear all kinds of jewelry and to a little girl that's icing on the cake.

I was thinking about it this morning, and I think when I dressed up my sole exposure to Romani was The Castafiore Emerald.
