As we all know, art is subjective. *gets glares* But personally, when I think 'fanart' I immediately think of hand-drawn art either of the traditional or digital mediums and those are generally a depiction of characters (human or not) or a specific setting relating to the originating storyline. (If that makes any sense.)

That's not to say that other hand crafts, such as knitting, sewing (plushies & costuming), sculpture, etc., are not considered fanart, they are just not what I immediately think of as fanart.

Photo manipulation and icons/banners, etc. kind of get their own grouping in my own mind. I personally don't think of these types of 'art' as fanart. I have seen some incredibly beautiful manips, but those have been so few and far between that they don't even count to me. And there is also such a difference between graphic art and what constitutes as fine art. So much graphic art is just taking other art (photographs in most cases) and altering it to some desired form. That isn't something that represents fanart to me and sometimes doesn't even deserve to be labeled as 'art' period.
(That makes me sound like such an art snob and I so am not.)

Errr, I guess to sum up my point. Fanart to me is more hand-drawn / hand-crafted art rather than any type of manipulation or graphic art.

I'm shutting up now. *cough*
